I’ve seen allot of condescending things posted about the Women’s March in recent days from both sides of the political aisle. So, I want to share why I personally marched. I marched because I am a survivor of sexual assault and our president has double digit rape accusations. I marched because 1 in 5 women in the United States will be sexually assaulted by the time they are done with college. I marched for the thousands of women who have died in domestic violence disputes. I marched because I have an aunt who was raped and killed on US soil, a friend who was killed by her boyfriend at 16, and more friends than I can count who have been harassed, stalked, or assaulted. I marched because I had to sit in court and listen to what my aunt's murderer did to her yet, for some reason, our law makers are still debating the definition of rape and are slashing funding to violence against women’s centers. This isn’t trivial. These are not small issues and it's certainly not funny. So, before you post about how someone doesn’t know what oppression is based off of a smiling photo of them at the march, or about how their clueless, remember that you do not know what someone has been through until they have told you. If I’ve learned anything through my work in “To Be Brave: Ending Body Shame” and the Body Joy Project, it’s to check my assumptions at the fucking door.

"We Believe You" officially comes out today. It features many first person essays from 36 different survivors of sexual assault. I am incredibly proud and honored to have two paintings and an essay in this collection. After my own rape, I felt incredibly unreal and dazed. The first friend I told about my rape acted like he didn't hear me, like what I had told him was so inconsequential it didn't merit a response. For a day, I tried to pretend like my rape didn't happen. That didn't work for me, I became overwhelmed. I felt revolted by my own body. The night after my rape, I took a bunch of photos of myself, I think from a need to assert, "this happened to you. Remember." For a couple of years, those photos sat on my computer. I finally opened that folder of photos when I felt like I could address my assault. I painted this self portrait from one of the photos taken the night after my assault. This portrait isn't just about the violation of my rape. It is also about the violation after my rape. The friends who sided with my rapist. The blame put upon me, the attitude of "why are you still complaining about this?" That shook my reality to the core. How can you learn to trust again after so many people, even your friends and family members, participate in your violation? It's time to change. It is time to say "I believe you." first, not "what were you wearing?" or "that will teach you to go to parties." It is time to put the shame where it belongs: on the shoulders of rapists and their enablers. @cosmopolitan @henryholtbooks @webelieveyoubk @thehuntinground @creatingconsentculture @lcadmfa #WeBelieveYou #webelieveyoubk #survivor #activistart #acrylicpainting #chloeallred #henryholt #officiallypublished
Studio deets. Here is another painting that explores the question: "If you could see it, would you have believed me?" The next painting is going to be an exploration of intimacy and how to represent positive touch on the body.
"Gaga and Kesha, We Believe You" postcards! I just got a huge stack of these in the mail. I made this illustration of @ladygaga and @iiswhoiis after my experience at the Academy Awards. These are for the other amazing survivors/activists I met at the Oscars to show my gratitude and love for everyone that I met. To Gaga, to Kesha, to all survivors: I believe you. We believe you. @webelieveyoubk #stoprapeeducate #freekesha #survivor #ladygaga #feminist #feministillustration #webelieveyou #webelieveyoubk #chloeallred #bodyjoyproject
