we got married; mission one

nice to meet you, i’m your love.

— Even now, it’s still decidedly strange for him to record without the other members.

There’s no Niel leading the way ahead of them all, excessively tall frame blocking the view; there’s no Chunji at his side, checking his reflection with his phone; there’s no C.A.P lagging behind them, yawning in lingering sleepiness; there’s no Changjo or Ricky chatting back and forth, trading snark with excited yammering. He misses it, misses them, because even if they spend most of their time together every day it still feels like something’s not quite right when teen top isn’t together as six, because they're incomplete and not one.

But he has no choice in the matter, obviously, because this show isn’t one for groups to attend together. We Got Married... He’d never thought he’d actually be picked to be on this show, especially not at the young age that he is, but, well, he figures most idols and korean stars think about being on the show at some point in their careers. Byunghun doesn’t want to actually get married yet, wants to after he turns thirty, but it feels like he’s getting a sneak peek at what it might be like years in advance. So - he’s kind of grateful for it, even if he’s nervous and ever the worrywart about how well the show will go.

The first recorded interview isn’t awkward, at least, and it fills him with an anxious sort of excitement as they head to namsam park: their destination for him to meet his wife and have their first date together. It doesn’t take long to get there, and having already been briefed over what to do, Byunghun sets off in search of his partner, hands tucked away in the pockets of his jeans. He purposefully gets distracted by a few other women wandering around the park, ones who are wearing pastel colours as well, but he doesn’t waste much time before coming across who he’s looking for.

There she is.

Park Choa - arguably someone he’d call his ideal type if he was the type to give names rather than simply describing them. She’s just as cute as ever, and unbeknownst to the viewers and to the show’s crew as well, Choa and him are actually good friends already. This definitely isn’t their first meeting, and they won’t have to act as if it is, but their relationship is known as being simple casual acquaintances through both being idols.

She isn’t turned towards him, busy talking to the cameras that have been keeping her company while she’d been waiting, and Byunghun pauses for just a moment before a grin lights up his face and he seems to brighten with an idea. Creeping forward as silently as he can hope to be, he pops up behind her, covering her eyes with small, delicate hands as he tries to feign having a deeper voice (tries being the operative word here, because he ends up dipping back into his normal tone before lapsing into embarrassed laughter).

“Oh, wow, I’m so sorry. Hmph.” She huffed loudly, folding her arms in front of her chest. How can someone not enjoy her babbling about her love for hello kitty? Well, thinking back, she might really have gone a little overboard. It was one of her quirks, Choa could ramble on and on about something if she was passionate about it. “But wait- what? A spork?!”

Joomi usually wasn’t one to get upset easily or to snap at her friends, the keyword here however being usually. It was a whole ‘nother story when Joomi was hungry and had just gotten something to eat for the first time in what seemed like hours on hours. “Mh! A spork!” speaking with a full mouth she then raised up her spoon in one hand her fork in the other, her brows furrowed as she threatened her friend and not even a second later she then pushes her bowl over to the other. “Stuff your mouth. It tastes really good!”

→ 15: Kiss in the Rain

Like this, he can almost pretend that they’re just regular people, living inconspicuously rather than being idols who have to be careful of their every move.

In the fading evening light, with cloudy skies over their heads and rain falling upon them, the dim streetlamps don’t reveal much of their surroundings, the sidewalks bustling with people hurrying to get home or wherever else they might be able to take shelter from the weather.

It’s cold, but the umbrella in one hand keeps Byunghun and his companion dry, and what his other hand holds keeps at least a part of him warm. Their fingers laced together, his thumb stroking at her soft skin idly, he makes sure to keep a secure hold of Choa’s hand, not wanting her to slip from his grasp.

It’s getting late, and they have to part soon, lest they get caught outside each other’s homes by any fans or people who might otherwise recognize them. Before that, though, he pauses as they walk, tugging the other back when she takes another step forward. Facing each other now, he releases her hand for only a moment to tug his face mask down under his chin before taking hold of her hand once more. He leans in slowly, gaze never leaving hers, and his lips form a smile, barely able to be seen, the moment just before he kisses her.

It’s warm — gentle, sweet, just as the last they’d shared had been, and as he takes a small step toward her, swallowing up the lingering distance between them to stay as close to her as he can, Byunghun’s focus slips and the umbrella tips to one side, no longer shielding them from the onslaught of rain. 

He breaks away from Choa in his surprise, a laugh bubbling out of him, almost too soft to be heard, and he blinks water from his lashes as he leans their foreheads together, not seeming to mind getting soaked so long as this moment lasts and doesn’t fade away.
