Just realised I never posted all of these yokai illustrations from last year. I meant to make some more for this year's cons but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Chochin-obake (提灯お化け) is a spirit from Japanese folklore. They are described as a lantern split down the middle with a tongue sticking out. They are commonly depicted as a lantern with a face. Similarly to the Kasaobake they come to life after 100 years. Chochin-obake typically do not mean any harm and intend to startle or prank humans. They are considered to be one of the most famous yokai frequently appearing in art or as a character in pop culture. However specific examples of stories involving the Chochin are rare and often resembles other Japanese stories of ghost lights. Due to them widely being depicted in art and very small amount of actual oral stories, it has been theorized that yokai was possibly developed as a character to entertain children.

Kasa-Obake & Chochin-Obake!
