My Little Pony: How To Make Friends
Chapter 1: Gray Clouds Don't Last Forever!
Somewhere out in the middle of the mountains, deep inside of a cave, away from anyone or anything else, something unexpected happened. It wasn't easy to describe just why it happened. Least of all, the pony that just woke up. Well, waking up was the proper term, as its eyes were just starting to blink open. It didn't take too long for the pony to fully open its eyes, although its brain was still groggy enough that it didn't even realize that it was a pony. It was still getting used to being awake, right now.
For a moment, the pony wasn't even sure if it was awake, considering that its immediate surroundings was nothing but more darkness. It had to blink its eyes a few times to reassure itself that its eyes were open. As the pony started to come to, its – no, their – eyes started to adjust slightly to the darkness, although not by a whole lot. At the very least, the newly awoken pony could make out the shapes and silhouettes of obstacles. Not that it stopped them from tripping and stumbling, as it felt as if they were completely unused to walking around on their own feet. Hooves? Feet-hooves. Whatever it was they were walking on; it was still too dark to really tell, after all.
It took a few moments for the pony to gain their footing, although they wouldn't hesitate to start walking around, slowly making their way through the cavern they had woken up in. They weren't entirely sure if they were heading toward any direction that could lead them anywhere else, but it was certainly more productive than standing around doing nothing. What's more, walking alone in the darkness gave the lone pony some time to collect their thoughts.
Who were they? They didn't know. How did they wind up in this dark cavern? Also didn't know. Where were they? Well, at this point, the pony was getting frustrated by their inability to answer any of their own questions.
So what did they know?
For a brief moment, they stopped in place, shivering somewhat as cool air washed over their body. They knew they were cold, so that was a start. They continued into the cavern, unsure of what they were even looking for. A way out, mostly, though something to keep warm with wouldn't have hurt either. It wasn't easy for them to keep track of where they were, considering that the cave held many twists and turns, each one leading to more caverns to inevitably get even more lost in.
Outside of the mysterious pony's own thoughts, the only sounds that kept them company was the sound of wind rushing and whistling throughout the cave. Their ears also noticed the unmistakable sounds of their hooves clopping gently against the rugged, uneven stone floor. Confusion was still prominent in the pony's mind, as they were growing more and more unsure about many things now. Was this normal? It certainly didn't feel normal, at least according to the increased heart rate that beat within their chest. Being stuck in the darkness for so long was starting to make their head feel fuzzy.
The pony didn't keep track of how long they had been roaming around the dark, stony maze, but it felt as if they had been stuck for at least an hour. They were curious as to how they even knew what time was, but they brushed it off with a presumption that it was something natural. Speaking of natural, however, a new sound started to enter the pony's ears, making them perk up with interest. Instead of the usual 'clip-clop' of rock that they had been used to, a delicate 'plink-tink' sound started up. As the pony registered the noise, they realized that the ground had become much cooler. Slicker, as well. They realized the latter because, after a mere few steps of trotting on the new, cold ground, they started to lose their footing (Hoofing? This was getting confusing!). Their front hooves started to slide forward faster than anticipated, causing the pony to momentarily panic and kick their back legs in an attempt to try and keep up with the rest of their body. As expected, this only caused the pony to trip and fall forwards, sliding on the cool, slick ground somewhat.
"Oof!"
They weren't injured, thankfully, although their meager sense of pride did take a hit. They felt momentarily lucky that they were alone. As far as they knew, at least.
After accepting the laws of momentum and gravity, the pony slid forwards, their body only stopping once they had bumped into a wall. The pony looked over their shoulder, as if ready to apologize for bumping into it in the first place. Before the words could come out of their mouth, their eyes widened, realizing that they were now looking into a pair of eyes. They were glowing ever-so-slightly and were a deep pink. The illumination from the glowing eyes only provided the smallest amount of vision, although the pony could see that the eyes did, in fact, belong to another pony!
Because they did not expect to bump into another pony, let alone see anyone else in the cave, the newly awoken pony quickly shot up to their feet, inadvertently scooting backwards slightly. "GYAH!" They yelled out, watching the other figure copy their exact movement, yelling at the same exact time! The scream echoed down the cave, returning to the pony's ears with atonal harmony. For a moment, their eyes didn't break away from the other pony's, watching carefully to see what they would do next.
Being very careful not to slip again, they moved forward, closer to the other pony. It wasn't until their noses were touching that they realized something that they probably should have earlier.
"...oh. That's me!" They thought, instantly feeling their nerves unwind as a relieved smile formed across their muzzle. Boy, did they feel silly! Up close, it was much easier to see that the wall itself was much like the floor, and acted as a mirror of sorts. The pony observed their reflection for a few extra seconds, taking in as much as they could, in spite of the darkness.
Indeed, they were a pony, with their eyes glowing a faint pink hue, making it moderately easier to see the rest of their face, as well as some of their body. It was hard to tell much else about them, however, such as the color of their coat or their mane. Speaking of hair, it happened to be incredibly long, wavy, and somewhat... messy. The pony attempted to brush some of their hair out of their left eye, though it merely flopped back into place. With a small puff of minor frustration, they gave up on fixing their messy 'do, opting to look around once more.
"Let's see..." They thought, moving slowly across the icy (yes, it had to be ice) ground. Tripping once was embarrassing enough. Their ears were folded back in anxious curiosity, listening out for anything that would stand out. It was at this point the pony realized the wind was growing louder. And colder. They kept their eyes peeled for a light source of some kind.
It didn't take long for a bright circle started to come into view. The ground became... soft. Snow, most likely. The unrelenting wind became even colder, yet the air felt much fresher. Their eyes were half shut, nearly blinded by the air and the blinding light. They had to continue, and refused to stop, fully shutting their eyes. In just a few short moments, the pony stepped outside of the cave, feeling freedom for what felt like the first time in their life.
Slowly they opened their eyes, slowly allowing their eyes to adjust to the light. It was certainly snowy, not to mention incredibly chilling and windy. Their mane was flown backwards as well, due to how heavy the snow was blowing. The pony didn't move, however cold they felt. With their eyes fully adjusted, they looked downwards at themselves. Their legs were white – almost off-white – with a third of them were sitting in a few inches of snow. That was one more fact they learned about themselves.
The pony shook the snow out of their face, gathering their strength once more to continue through the snowstorm. Looking upwards, they could see a thick tree-line of evergreens. The sky was completely overcast with dark, gray clouds. They bee-lined for the forest, hoping for it to lead downwards. Away from the snow.
Now they could start figuring out where they were. And where to go.
...and where to get something to eat.
Cloudy days weren't abnormal, even in the colorful town of Ponyville. When the sky had been blanketed with sheets of gray clouds, blustering gusts of wind, all while offering none of the Sun's warmth for a full four days, however, it was definitely noticeable. Out of all of the ponies, the one who apparently took the most issue out of this situation was local sports-buff, Sunny Daze. True, the sky didn't have to be sunny in order to ride scooters, play soccer, or go surfing, but it certainly helped. What's more, when the sky was gloomy and gray, it deterred other ponies from properly enjoying the activities in the first place.
Friends or no friends, sky or no sky, this didn't stop Sunny Daze from making her own fun! So what if most of the ponies had been spending their time indoors? So what if the winds were unrelenting and cool? It was still Spring, and the days were too short to completely ignore the outdoors! This was how Sunny found herself riding her scooter down the walkway, sporting her purple, sticker-patterned (as well as battered and dusted) helmet and a determined expression. She would have fun, no matter what the weather was!
As she expected, the roads of Ponyville were very empty, offering the white-coated pony little distraction from her own ride around town. Aside from the various, multi-colored buildings that lined the sides of the paths, Sunny Daze did some sight seeing for all of the public-service structures (fountains, benches, bird houses, the like) and flowers. Passing by one large, well-kept flowerbed – courtesy of Wysteria, she presumed – the scooter-riding girl slowed down for a brief moment, enjoying the sight.
The flowers were gorgeous, obviously, though Sunny couldn't help but take notice of the fact that there were no birds, butterflies, or bees hanging around. Given how strong the wind was blowing the flowers, she couldn't blame them for not lingering. If any were, they were surely blown away by now.
Sunny Daze continued on her path, sighing gently to herself as she stared upwards. More and more grey swirled endlessly above her, blowing her tail and mane somewhat. "Ugh, will the Sun come out already?" She said to herself, shaking her head. It was starting to get too cool for the pony to thoroughly enjoy her activities. The girl placed her reservations aside as she sped forwards, hoping to find something to keep her mind off of everything. The chance of seeing another pony outside was slim, so she didn't get her hopes up.
A few moments later, Sunny Daze would feel lucky to keep her expectations lowered as she moved closer to the large lake that resided within Ponyville. For one, a family of ducks were resting and feeding in the water, but more importantly, another pony was casually resting near the side. If the dark-lavender coat didn't give her away, than the bright green present that resided as a cutie mark did: it was none other than Razzaroo! Even from afar, Sunny could tell that the little bookworm was currently poring herself over a book.
Without hesitation, Sunny Daze hurried forward, happy to finally have someone to talk to. "Yo, Razzaroo!" She called, twisting her hips in a way that caused her scooter to drift, kicking up dust and dirt as she skidded to a halt. The sudden call caused the pony to jolt her head up, immediately catching attention to the active pony. Razzaroo couldn't help but feel the need to shield her book from potential dirt that could've been blown into the nooks and crannies of the pages. Fortunately, the wind took it upon itself to blow all of the dirt particles away, thankfully avoiding the eyes of both ponies.
Realizing that her book was safe, Razzaroo unfurled her arms, smiling happily at Sunny Daze as she hopped off of her scooter. "Oh, hello, Sunny Daze!" She greeted, waving a hoof casually at the other girl that was walking closer to her. ""Fancy meeting you out here!"
"Why wouldn't I be?" She laughed, casually sitting opposite of the book-smart pony. "Just cuz the Sun's away doesn't mean us ponies can't play!"
Razzaroo laughed gently at this statement, nodding along. "I know what you meant! It's just no fun writing or reading indoors!"
"What are you reading, anyways?" Sunny Daze asked, tilting her head slightly as she leaned inwards somewhat. From Sunny's perspective, the book Razzaroo possessed not only offered a multitude of words, but a slew of charts and diagrams that she couldn't even begin to explain! In fact, she almost hoped the gray-coated pony would do the job for her. Naturally, Razzaroo obliged, beaming instantly as she adjusted her sparkling purple reading-glasses.
"Oh, this is a book Spike lent to me!" She started up, showing off the cover. 'The Equestiran Almanac', Sunny Daze read to herself. "I asked him to help me in keeping track of the days, and he gave me this!"
"W-wow! He always knows so much, doesn't he?" Sunny asked, not fully comprehending what she was even looking at. If Spike had a hand in this, than it was bound to be something intellectual. Otherwise: something outside of Sunny Daze's expertise. Not that she was embarrassed by this fact. "...so, uh... what is an 'Almanac', anyway?'
"Well I'm glad you asked!" Razzaroo commented, looking even more lovely and eager as she set the book onto the ground, turning it in a way that both ponies could read and look at the pages. "This sort of book is like...a journal of the world! Not only does it keep track of the days, but also the weather it endured, the temperature, the season, what grew the most that day... stuff like that!"
"Oh... wow..!" Sunny replied. Despite being pleasantly surprised with the contents, she was unable to show the same enthusiasm that her friend clearly showed. Not that she didn't try, at least! Razzaroo didn't really notice (or care) either.
"Yes yes yes, the Almanac does carry a lot of information. In fact, did you know, Sunny," Razzaroo started up, flipping a few pages ahead with a renewed sense of eagerness. The other pony could only sit and listen patiently, attempting to keep track of her rambling. "Today marks a brand new record for the longest consecutive days that the sky has been completely overcast with clouds?"
"I'd believe it," Sunny Daze responded, looking upwards at the overly cloudy sky. Razzaroo did the same, her ears angling somewhat as she heard the other sigh wistfully. "Maybe Ponyville will make history by not having the Sun show up ever again!"
Razzaroo couldn't help but snort out of amusement, finding enjoyment from her friend's hyperbole. "Aw, Sunny Daze," She chided playfully. "It doesn't matter what records are broken or what facts are written in some musty ol' book. The Sun will come out eventually! It has before in the past, right?"
"Right..." Sunny replied, raising an eyebrow as she continued to listen to her smarter pal.
"Plus, it's not like the Sun has 'gone away!' Think of it as... the clouds wanting to come out and play, too!"
For a moment, Sunny Daze didn't want to humor this sentiment. Clouds wanting to play? That couldn't happen, right? Regardless, Razzaroo's self-amused giggled caused her to chuckle along, unable to keep herself from finding some sort of 'agreement' from this statement.
"Ahahah! I guess you're right, Razzaroo," She began, humming thoughtfully as her gaze returned to the aged, well-worn book. "I mean, if I was constantly pushed to the side-lines, I'd wanna have my day in the limelight."
"Exactly!" The purple pony started up, leaning forward even more excitedly. Before she could break into another session of rambling, she felt a soft splash of rain 'plip!' against her snout, causing her to pause almost instantaneously. "...wuh-oh..!"
"Huh?" Sunny Daze started up, looking up at the sky once more. Much like her friend, she was met with a raindrop suddenly hitting against her nose, causing her to blink. "Aw, man! Is it actually raining?" She complained, starting to shield her face with her left arm. "Come on..! What does that book say about rain?" She asked off-handedly.
"Um... oh gosh..!" Razzaroo started up, immediately closing her almanac and pulling it closeby. It was obvious she had noticed the rain as well, closing her eye as the raindrops fell into her face. There was no denying the fact that the wind had picked up as well, causing the rain to smack more fiercely into the ponies' faces. Before either of the two knew it, the clouds above doused the ground with immense, unrelenting waves of rain. The ducks that had been peacefully feeding in the lake didn't waste time in swimming elsewhere, hoping to seek shelter from the inclement weather.
"I don't know," Razzaroo replied, tucking the book into her personal, embroidered tote bag. "But what I do know is that we should head inside before we're both soaking wet!"
"Good idea," Sunny Daze replied, quickly hopping up to her feet as the rain started to harder and faster than either of the two expected. "I hate the rain..!" She whined, setting her scooter upright and stepping onto it. Before she darted off, she turned towards the glasses=wearing pony, who was patiently folding her sparkly glasses away. "Uh, hey, Razzaroo..! Wanna hop on? It'll be faster than walking, at least."
"Yes yes yes! T-thank you, Sunny!" Razzaroo replied, not hesitating in the slightest to accept a free ride. She hopped onto the scooter, her hind-legs firmly planted on the board while her forelegs held onto the sportier pony tightly.
"You're welcome. Just hold tight, alright?" Sunny responded, making sure that her helmet was well-adjusted before kicking her leg forwards. Even though she was 'riding against the weather' at this point, she still managed to speed back into the 'main square' of Ponyville, feeling Razzaroo bury herself against the other girl.
"D-do we have to go this fast?!" Razzaroo exclaimed, shivering as she stood statue-still atop of Sunny's scooter.
"Yes!" Sunny Daze answered, not taking her eyes off of the empty pathway in front of them. "I don't need a book to let me know when these clouds will cover us in rain!" Even though she didn't mean to insult the reference, Razzaroo couldn't help but feel mildly insulted on the almanac's behalf. Regardless, the clouds would, in fact, begin to open up, practically flooding the world below with a fresh gust of precipitation.
It was at this point that Sunny realized she couldn't continue riding through this weather. Not with another passenger's safety in mind, at least. While the rain relentlessly drizzled above, she pulled Razzaroo by her hand into the nearest shop that was close by. Fortunately, this shop happened to be owned by Cotton Candy, so at the very least the two could hang out and get something to drink in the meantime.
The shop in question was homey and cozy, featuring tables and booths, capable of seating multiple ponies. Currently, aside form Cotton Candy – who was tending the soda fountains – there were only three other ponies present.
To the right, Puzzlemint and Chocolate Chipper took up a set of booths, playing a board game that Spike had shown them recently: chess. Much like 'chocolate chip checkers', the pieces were made out of candy (specifically marzipan). The rules were also more complex, although the two ponies had grown a fondness for playing the game.
Puzzlemint loved trying to figure out ways to win the game as fast and efficiently as possible. Chocolate Chipper preferred to knock out as many pieces as she could so that she could eat them.
When Sunny Daze and Razzaroo entered, neither of the two turned their attention, giving an off-handed wave to the duo before returning their focus. Clearly they were taking their current match seriously. Off to the left, both girls recognized the singular purple and pink pony sitting at a table. Skywishes was, as per usual, staring out of the window, staring upwards at the sky. It didn't even seem like she had noticed two ponies who had just entered the shop. Steaming gently in front of her was a simple mug of tea. Peppermint, specifically.
Cotton Candy, who had previously been cleaning a glass out of boredom, readied herself behind the counter, eager to fulfill an order. "Welcome in, girls! What can I get y'all on this..." She paused, staring out of the window with a bemused expression. "...nice... gray... day?"
"Hi, Cotton Candy! I'll have a root beer float, please," Razzaroo replied, already seating herself at a table.
"I'll have a rainbow sherbet float," Sunny Daze sighed, seating herself opposite her friend. "And add an extra scoop on top, please..!"
It didn't take long for the pink-coated pony to begin scooping ice-cream and pouring soda into two large glasses. "Guess the weather's got y'all down too, huh?"
"Yeah..." The two sighed simultaneously, slumping forward in their seats somewhat.
"I can't blame you," Puzzlemint replied from afar, glancing over nonchalantly. "Everyone in Ponyville has been feeling it."
"Mmhm," Chocolate Chipper hummed, gently chewing on the head of a pawn. Even she wasn't feeling too hungry right now.
"Guess that's just what happens when Spring arrives," Razzaroo said, removing the 'Equestrian Almanac' from her tote bag and opening it upon the table once again. "April showers and all that."
"Well, I'm ready for the Sun to come back already," Sunny Daze said as Cotton Candy set their drinks beside them. She didn't hesitate to pull her triple-scooped sherbet float close and take a dragging sip from the straw that stuck out. "It's just no fun being outside when hardly anyone else wants to be."
"You can say that again..." Skywishes had sighed, not breaking her gaze away from the window.
This caught the attention of the two others, turning their attention to the wistful, purple pony.
"What do you think is bothering her?" Sunny Daze whispered to Razzaroo. Before the silver-coated pony could respond, however, Skywishes continued on, as if she had heard Sunny's whispering.
"When the clouds are out, you can't see the sky!" Skywishes took a long sip from her mug, still not breaking her concentration from the window. Razzaroo took the time to turn to Sunny, whispering even quieter in her direction.
"And pegasus ponies won't fly if the sky is too cloudy!" Sunny couldn't help but hold back a snickering snort, hiding her growing smile. It wasn't that much of a secret that Skywishes loved anything having to do with flying. Like a certain pegasus who happened to be her 'best friend'.
Hearing this statement from Razzaroo, Skywishes sighed even more dramatically and loudly, slumping into her seat some more. Even the other three ponies in the shop noticed, with Cotton Candy speaking up first.
"Erm... do you want another refill on peppermint tea, Sky?"
"No thank you," She responded, finishing off what was in her mug before gently pushing it to the side.
"Well, don't feel bad, Skywishes!" Razzaroo continued, speaking directly to the purple pony in question. "I'm sure Star Catcher and the rest will pay us a visit soon! Even if it takes all week, these clouds won't stay gray and gloomy forever. No no no!"
Skywishes peered over, her expression looking quite hopeful. "Do you really mean that, Razz?"
"Oh, yes yes yes!" She giggled, flipping her book a few pages again. "Spring is always filled with unpredictable weather, whether it be rain or shine. We just have to be patient is all." This seemed to please Skywishes, as she gave a gentle smile, nodding along. Sunny Daze was listening as well, though her attention turned to the window as well, pointing her hoof towards it.
"Maybe we don't need to wait long at all! Take a look, everyone!"
All of the other ponies stared out of the window, watching as the rain began to slow to a halt, with the clouds slowly starting to part as well. This gave all of the ponies the smallest, yet brightest, view of the sun, which was starting to set upon the horizon. Orange sunbeams caused the pinkish-purplish sky to glow somewhat, bleeding through the deep violet rainclouds, which were starting to move away from Ponyville. The Sun itself was a deep orange ball of light, just dull enough to not blind anyone that stared into it.
"Ooooh!"
"Hmmm!~"
"Oh, so gorgeous!"
"Hiya, Sun!" Sunny Daze laughed happily. "So sad to watch you go, but so happy to see you again!" Everyone chuckled and laughed warmly at this statement.
"See? I told you!" Razzaroo beamed, taking a long, strong sip from her root-beer float. From her peripheral vision, she watched Skywishes' smile grow quite a bit, her eyes slowly shutting. Her lips moved, but hardly any sound came out. As far as she (and every other cafe goer) was concerned, she wasn't meant to hear this.
"Star light, star bright... first star I see tonight..!"
"Does a wish count if you wish it upon the Sun?" Puzzlemint mused aloud, tapping her chin. "I mean, it is technicallya star, but is it obligated to make wishes come true?"
"SHHHH!" Every other pony shushed, turning towards Puzzlemint, who quickly shrunk back in her seat.
"R-right! Sorry. Shhhh, and all that..!"
"Oh, please please let us see some friends tonight!" Skywishes whispered, continuing on as if no one had said anything. "Whether they're old or whether they're new... let them know we'd like to see them, too!"
After a few seconds of not moving from her spot, Skywishes finally opened her eyes, also curiously glancing out of the window. No doubt with hopes of seeing some sort of sign. It took a few brief moments of ponies sipping on their sugary drinks, but eventually she did see a shooting star shoot across the darkening sky. This caused the purple pony to stand in her seat, her front hooves planted on the table. "Look, look! A shooting star! That means my wish must come true!"
"Here's hoping," Cotton Candy said, smiling happily as she picked up Skywishes' empty mug from the table.
"Mine sure has!" Sunny Daze said appreciatively, watching as the sky turned into a deep, glowing hue of orange and violet. "This has to mean the sun comes out tomorrow. Right, Razzaroo?"
"Um... I believe so!" She answered, half-unsure of her own answer. "It's like they say about the setting Sun! Uh... they say... Puzzlemint, what do they say?"
"Red skies at night, sailors' delight!" The posh pony recited proudly. Razzaroo nodded along, beaming happily to Sunny Daze.
"That! Ponyville will be able to play outside in no time!"
"Not just Ponyville," Skywishes said, getting up from her seat and heading towards the door. "But all the others as well! Oh, I can't wait to see them!" She said, giving one last wave to the others. "Goodbye, my friends!"
"Mmmph!" Chocoalte Chipper answered with a muffled voice, waving a hoof as she kept a half-chewed pawn in her mouth.
"See ya tomorrow!" Sunny Daze responded happily, giggling somewhat.
"Later! Oh, I hope we get to see the pegasi and unicorns again," Razzaroo said, mostly to herself as she kept sipping at her float.
"With the Sun out, everyone will be out! Oh, uh, by the way... check, Chipper," Puzzlemint laughed, putting her opponent's piece into check.
"Hrmmmph..!"
This grunt of displeasure caused the other ponies to laugh in amusement. Chocolate Chipper merely gulped down the rest of the pawn, focusing her attention back towards the board game. She took her board games as seriously as Puzzlemint did.
While the two ponies competed against each other, Sunny gave a knowing smirk to Razzaroo. "Hey, maybe you can help Spike write a new Almanac for Ponyville, huh?"
Razzaroo perked up by quite a bit, her expression shifting to one of eagerness, yet seriousness. "Oh, you're so right, Sunny! Yes yes yes, I should help write a new one! That way other ponies know how the weather can go around here!"
"Oh! Uh... a-alright!" The other pony said, with a half-hearted chuckle. She was kidding, somewhat, but the bookworm pony took her 100 percent serious. "That'll make Spike's day, at least."
"Day? This'll make his whole year!" Razzaroo responded, already opening her personal diary to scribble and record her own 'findings'. "Yes yes yes..!"
By this point, Skywishes had already exited Cotton Candy's shop, slowly walking home. All the while, her gaze was fixated upwards, taking in the breathtaking sight of the setting sun. "Goodness... it really has been awhile, huh?" She said, talking to herself. "Well, if the weather really is clearing up, then maybe we can see each other again, Star Catcher..!"
After a few moments, she'd slow up, sitting down on the path – which was still damp from the previous rain shower – and thinking even more. "...why do the gray clouds keep you away? I mean, it's only been raining for a little bit! Maybe it's the wind? The cold? Something else..?" She asked, not expecting any sort of answer to come from the. She knew better than to be that greedy.
As the Sun started to disappear over the skyline, the pony shook her head, continuing on her path with a small smile. "...maybe I'm just tired. I'm sure by tomorrow everything will have worked itself out..!"
"I'm cold," Thought a certain white-coated, gray-maned pony as they grumbled irritably to themselves. "I'm wet. I'm hungry. I'm thirsty. I'm tired. I'm... lonely."
While they were quite a long ways away from the snowy, icy mountains, the mystery pony was still far away from any other sapient, living creature that happened to be nearby. As far as they knew, at least. They were lucky to have moved into a green, lively forest. It smelled of fresh rain, lively trees, and active vegetation. It was a good change of pace, though with nothing else to assist them, the pony still felt quite lonesome.
At one point, they found themselves walking along a thin, gentle river, along side some green grass. Some blades were crowded together in dense, little patches, while other patches had some purple flowers. The grayish-white pony sniffed at the ground, curiously munching at some tall, dark-green blades of grass. Their eyes opened brightly as the flavor of something strong and bitter hit their tongue. "Sweet... yet bitter? Kinda sour... tasty! Mmh, I want more!" They thought, hungrily munching along more and more grasses, enjoying the odd flavor of the grasses. While they didn't know it, the grass they munched on happened to be spring onion, which popped up quite generously during this time of year.
After a few moments of chewing thoughtfully on the yummy, flavorful grass, the pony couldn't help but smack their lips. They were unaware of the fact their tongue was now stained a deep green color, matching the same hue as the onion they snacked on. "...thirsty." Was all they thought, repeating the word in their mind as their attention shifted to the gentle river to their left.
It took a few seconds of studying before the pony hurriedly buried their muzzle into the cool, yet refreshing, water. They took a few greedy gulps, pulling their snout out and gasping for air. They didn't wait long before burying their snout again and sipping a little bit longer.
This pattern continued for a few moments longer as the pony's brain recalibrated itself. "Mmmh... water... tasty..! Sweet... sweet like grass... but not as harsh? Not sour... but sour is good! Right? Water, grass, grass, water... too yummy to choose!" They thought rapidly, looking between the land and the water. During their period of thought, they were unable to resist a large, loud yawn. In doing so, they fell to their knees, lowering their head to the ground.
"Golly... I'm sleepy! Can't keep my eyes open... maybe... more water? More grass? I can't even move my mouth. Maybe... maybe I should..."
Before they could even complete their thought, the dull-colored pony shut their eyes, giving in to a long, peaceful sleep. One they certainly deserved after such a long trek through the mountains. Perhaps tomorrow they could learn more about this world they found themselves in.
The pony didn't even take notice of the closed-off flowers that lined and filled the forest, nor did they recognize the ever-changing color of the sky above. Perhaps falling asleep while the sky was red was a good thing? That's what they hoped, at least.
"...t'morrow... friends..." They hummed sleepily to themselves. It didn't even seem like they knew what they were saying.
Nor were they aware of how correct they'd be!
