The word chocolate comes from the Aztec word xocolatl, which means bitter water. Aztec xocolatl consisted of a cold, savory drink made from a mixture of cocoa, cinnamon, aniseed and cornmeal. They may have used chocolate beaters like this one, called molinillo, to mix the drink. Today, Mexican chocolate drinks are made by adding chocolate to hot milk and then rubbing the stirrer or beater rapidly between the palms to froth the drink.
