The origin of Belgian chocolates dates back to the 17th century when the first signs of chocolate trading were witnessed in Ghent, Belgium. That time in 1635, chocolate was sold as a tonic by the local pharmacist.
Straight after the 17th century, a major move happened in the Belgian chocolate timeline in the 19th century when the first pressed chocolate tablets, pastilles, and figurines were sold for the first time. It is probably around this time that much-renowned chocolate manufacturers now formed their base plants then.
Then came the 20th century, often regarded as the century of Belgian inventions. Four major inventions in this century changed the Belgian chocolate landscape forever. The introduction of chocolate spread, the invention of praline and ballotin and the development of a transport mechanism for liquid chocolates.
In 1912, the first chocolate with a soft chocolate filling was made which was followed by the first ballotin- a box in which pralines are packed, which was invented in 1915. The transport mechanism for liquid chocolates was followed by in 1925. And last was the founding of chocolate spread which can be dated back to 1952.
And in the 21st century, Belgian Chocolates gained a world-wide reputation. Belgian chocolates are praised worldwide for their unmatched quality and distinct taste.
