South Parade / Main Street is home to a good number of cafes. With easy access via Blackburn Station, you are really faced with the problem of deciding which cafe to visit. I came down this way just after lunchtime, so did not have the problem of rush hour periods. Chocomella caught my attention with all the pretty decals on the windows and its definitely a neighbourhood gem with great friendly staff.
Being just after lunchtime, the cafe was empty. I was greeted by Sherry, the owner/manager, and one of the waitresses (didn't catch her name). They were having a bite to eat, but were still friendly and welcoming.
The dining area is not very big, but I believe takeaway is also an option if it is full.
Mocha
The standard coffees come in three sizes at about 50c difference between each of them. My mocha was simply amazing. The coffee flavour was rich and the chocolate flavour added a nice sweetness to it.
I initially wanted to try the Thai Chicken pie, but unfortunately they were all out, so I went for the Moroccan Lamb.
Moroccan Lamb Pie
w/ chips and salad
The salad was nice and fresh with a generous tangy sour vinegarette through it. The chips were cooked using an air fryer, so they were not as crispy as I would have liked, but they were cooked well with a nice soft and creamy potato centre.
The filling was very hot, and the lamb pieces were soft and very moist but were a bit big, but they broke up quite easily so taking a bite did not result in a burnt tongue! There was a great spiced sauce with soft creamy chickpeas through it. The crust wasn't as crunchy as I'd have liked, but it was still a really good pie.
The staff were very friendly and chatted to me while I was waiting for my meal. Sherry told me of how she had originally owned the store with another friend over 7 years ago, but ended up selling it after a few years. Two years later, the new owners had put the store up for sale and so she decided to purchase it once again. At a prime location (visible when you exit the Blackburn Station), Chocomella has quite a bit of competition with the other cafes on that strip, but their coffee, pies and service are worth the visit.
