Jindai-ji Temple Daruma Doll Market

One of the biggest Daruma Doll Markets in Japan, over 300 stalls selling the round dolls gather around the grounds of Jindai-ji Temple. Daruma are sold with blank eyes which owners paint in once their wish for the New Year has been fulfilled. Unique to the Jindai-ji Daruma Market, visitors can bring their old dolls and have the character 阿 painted on their right eye (which has the meaning of closing events) and in the left eye of the new doll have the character 梵 painted to signify new beginnings.
