TRAVEL JOURNAL #8:TRIP TO CHILDREN'S HOME OF HOPE, CHENNAI.

It was year 1998 when I received a phone call from Mrs Thampi, the Co-Founder of CHOH , also the mother of my dear friend Premi Thomas . She wanted a donation for the Orphangae . I must have donated about $150 … and kind of forgot about it . Later Mrs Thampi sent me some pictures of the adorable, innocent kids of the orphanage …something triggered inside me..as I sat at the San Bruno Sai Center ….to hold a humble fundraiser with the help of my kids and friends . We raised $7k …and sent it there ...saw the IMPACT of the POWER of the dollar …after that there has been no looking back…and HOH was created from the Parent Founder CHOH in year 1999..
13 years have passed …. CHOH has gone through its own journey like HOH . The Saintly Founder ,Mrs Lilly Prabhakaran, passed away in year 2007 , Mrs Thampi is now 85 yrs old and is unwell …
For few years after yr 2007 ..CHOH went through “growing Pains” as the Daughters of these great souls took over the challenging job of running this Orphanage. . HOH stuck with them through thick and thin …guiding them, encouraging them . Vikram Dutt , was our Programme Director at that time…. We guided them with “Tough Love” …..and today words cant describe the transformation !!
THE NEW CHOH … A HOME OF EXCELLENCE !!
Last year , there was a lump in my throat when I stared at the barren land… where CHOH once stood dilapidated ..but Proud !
Today what I saw is …. An Institution ! I cant believe what I am seeing as Indrani ( the daughter of Founder Mrs Prabhakaran) took me around this partially completed building . Indrani is a new women… EMPOWERED and PASSIONATE !! After her mothers death … she could barely speak ..in her own words “ I am too shy to ask for donations “
Today this gentle , fragile lady has left no stone unturned ..she has moved corporations to donate towards the building fund. Her faith in GOD is steadfast … miracles are happening everyday. She is an artiste and her plans are beautiful. She has masterminded this amazing home ..every detail has been thought of with tender loving care. . I could see the excitement in her eyes..as she explained every corner of this new future home.She definitely has the Higher Power on her side .. a direct HOT LINE with God !. God seems to answer her every prayer She speaks about a beautiful garden… and the landscape is donated … she wants a elevator for the home… a donation appears !
CHOH is going to be Gods miracle. The Contractor is working with so much love and dedication, which is unheard of .
Every room will be connected to nature with large windows , sunlight coming through Sky lights , sun roofs, fish tanks, gardens , beautiful tiles , paintings , music room, ,dance studio,craftsroom,..etc etc …. Sounds abs magical …a dream home !
She is so creative…since the Govt has taken the front land for National High way .Indrani is converting the roof top into this amazing sports arena with basket ball, badminton court ,.running tracks, etc etc .
I just know all this will happen…. CHOH is going to become the ultimate home …fulfilling every activity ..a role model home .God is on their side . Such purity of purpose and combined sincerity of the team of Nimmi, and Shobha ( Mrs Thampi daughters)and Indrani etc cannot go un answered by God. Allot of credit should go to Dear Nimmi and Shobha who were the contact person for HOH . Nimmi and Shobha have worked silently behind the scenes .
This team has put every aspect of human growth in this project….so that these kids will graduate both physically and spiritually in all aspects of their life .
I have goose bumps… just seeing what I am seeing today… God Bless Them !
English empowerment starting at kindergarten level
CHOH has its own Tanya primary school which as become English medium since 2 years
I was very impressed to see the tiny tots speak fluent English .
Some of these kids come from horrific back grounds and have been literally rescued from the streets .
It was sheer delight to watch them dance , sing and talk in fluent English.
The ultimate success story, Kamala
A very despondent mom who is half blind.... Deserted by her husband ...had given up all hope . She decided to end her life along with her 2 girls.
The older girl was 3 years old.... Heard her mom speak these words and immediately clutched onto her arm and said ...STOP
!... please don't kill yourself and us ... I will take care of you and my sister .
And she DID
.. This girl is kamala ..who along with her sister came to CHOH . Today she has finished her nursing diploma and is working as a qualified Nurse in a prestigious hospital.
She has plans for higher studies, BSC nursing. She is currently taking. Care of her mother and sister as she promised .
Her Sister has also done very well at CHOH and is going for teacher training
I met with kamala this time and was struck by her silent quiet dignity. She is known by her peers to be a DOER and has earned great respect at her work.
She was barely 7 yrs old when i first met her at CHOH...
She is a true testimony of the ultimate success story of HOH
Sashima Is another great success story of hoh . She has polio and Was barely 10 yrs old when HOH First started funding CHOH She worked as a kindergarten teacher at CHOH.
Today she is working for a courier company
ORPHANS STARTING THEIR OWN CHARITY
NBharani and Peter are the first graduates of CHOH in the early 70,s. NBharini’s parents had leprosy and Peter was picked up from the streets .
Today they are running a small home called Zarine Illam(home), with the help of Generous and kind Nimmi . This home currently has 4 Orphan boys ……WOW !! This is absolutely Mind Blowing !!
What an inspirational story …!
I can go on and on… about the success stories of CHOH .I got a chance to witness a wonderful cultural programme. Each girl in the dance had her own unique story of grit, courage and determination.
These girls are not privileged like our kids ..but have been blessed by God to be belong to this loving home called CHOH….that gave birth to HOH!
