Know how pets often reflect their owners in fiction? Nagi and Choki are no exception.
For starters, Nagi wants a pet that doesn't give him too much work and where does he go? A flower shop, not even a pet shop. If he wanted an actual animal, I guarantee you he could totally have chosen a turtle and not have much work to do (I've had turtles, so I would know). More, Nagi is much more like a cactus than he is a turtle.
For starters, as a plant, Choki doesn't move. As a cactus, Choki truly doesn't move, not even with a storm, it stays firm and immobile (by this I mean its body, how it doesn't even sway with a little breeze). Nagi is, for what is worth, an immovable object, with Reo being the indomitable will that pushes him to move. I mean, Reo even is the one that drags him everywhere, as if he's carrying a flower pot with him because otherwise it won't move.
Cactuses are known for their spikes, their thorns, how it keeps others away and harms whoever is brave enough to approach. Nagi starts as someone distant, no friends, keeping everyone away - he even says he isn't the most approachable person -, and Reo? Reo has been hurt a lot ever since he met and befriended Nagi, and his hurt always come from Nagi. I've seen a post on Pinterest pointing out how Nagi hates to see Reo cry but is always the number 1 reason why he's crying to begin with, and that's what I mean. And it's not like he even does it on purpose; just like cactus, who can't really control their thorns to just like disappear or something to not harm others, Nagi always hurt Reo unintentionally, most of the times he doesn't even notices it.
As any other plant, cactuses need water and sun to survive, but give too much of either, and it'll harm them instead. When Reo met him, Nagi was basically decaying, then Reo nurtured him back to life, becoming his water and sun. However, Reo did too much, wouldn't leave him alone, and what could have been a beautiful cactus with a flower in bloom became a just as sickly plant as before, even worse now that it had experience what it was like to be healthy.
Had Nagi gotten a turtle instead of Choki, the symbolism wouldn't match in the way it does with Choki. For example, turtles are symbols of protection due to their shells, but Nagi isn't really protecting anyone, not even Reo; like I say above, he harms him instead, unconsciously and unintentionally, sure, but it's still harm.
The one thing I could say Nagi is like a turtle is in their energy levels. Turtles are known for being slow animals, and overall that isn't wrong. But if you ever had a turtle or truly interacted with one, you'll know they're actually quite fast, just usually save that energy for escapes and more emergency situations. Nagi is a lazy person, preferring sleeping and gaming over training, even during the games he usually does the bare minimum, but if the situation truly calls for it, his energy levels spikes and he becomes much more focused, much more interested and invested. However, these instances can also be compared to a cactus having a flower in bloom, with the flower symbolizing Nagi's awakening, so truly, in the end, a cactus still is Nagi's spirit animal.

CHOKI IS SO SMOL 🥺🥺🥺🥺💚
cursed creature of the day...korok choki
In putting together the resource post, I found a couple illustrations from the first novel that I haven't seen anywhere before, at least on the English speaking side of the internet.
The light novels are illustrated by Sannomiya Kota, who's the artist for Episode Nagi.
Here's a couple from Nagi's part, including a cute Choki cameo.
...and here's two from Bachira's! I'm shocked not more people have shared these or talked about them. There's his monster! and Yuu!!
His is my favourite LN backstory to date 💛
