Me: You ever think how Chondra and Claudio, from their outfits and characters, have no connection to black 90s culture?
Chondra’s overalls kinda do but they’re too short. Compare hers to the baggy ones people wore and they stick out. They could’ve easily made them longer and more relaxed, which fits her more. And Claudio has some elements (like his vest), but the anime shirt cancels it out? Im not entirely sure he could’ve gotten that in the 90s (I’m ignoring their trip to Japan). They both have too many accessories from Japan (which could definitely work if they pulled back a little and mixed in black influences)
And besides the PSA they give to Alex and the terrible joke Claudio makes about locks, neither of them make any references to their culture? I’m not saying they needed to be drenched in the stereotypical black things. But I am saying there should be a balance between culture and character; one shouldn’t erase the other (unless that’s a struggle the character goes through). Claudio literally runs a record store and Chondra loves to dance; why isn’t there ANY mention about black musicians or dances? Why do I have to sit through a discussion about heavy metal and not about that? Why not combined the two in the same discussion (albeit in a different less tedious context). Have Chondra talk about the step team she was on in hs and college. Make her attacks based on dance moves or SOMETHING
And it’s weird cause the 90s was the peak time for black tv and sitcoms?? Which accurately depicts what black teens/young adults wore AND how they acted??? They could’ve easily watched Fresh Prince and based Claudio’s design OFF of Will’s. Why isn’t he wearing bright funky colors that reflects his outgoing personality? Why can’t Chondra have braids or a hairstyle from Moesha, instead of the afro people draw when they’re not black themselves?? Why is it the only time they talk about being black it’s “Dang, sure is hard to be an African American! What a rough life it is” (And while it’s important to point out black issues, the fact a white person wrote it and a non-black actress performs most of it is gross). Let them show every side to being black. The good, and the hard parts.
TLDR: give me custody of Chondra and Claudio you can’t have them anymore
