Do you know Ghanaian food?
Maybe not….well, if you don’t you will need to quickly befriend a Ghanaian and beg him to cook some of those delicacies for you or quickly buy a one way ticket (Okay, that one must be too much :) ).
Anyway, during the time that I spent in Ghana I did not enjoy every food but some are still special to me. I did like to go “chop” ( eat ) in local joints and discover dishes with my friends.
Here is my top 3 of Ghanaian dishes that are to die for :
It is a Ghanaian dish of cooked rice and beans. It may be prepared at home, but it is mainly sold by roadside vendors. It is prepared by boiling the beans and rice together. Waakye is mostly eaten for breakfast (Yes you read me well. I could never eat that for breakfast but people do it) or lunch. It may be eaten with Kelewele, fried fish, gari or spaghetti on the side, wele ( beef skin),pear, boiled eggs or fried chicken. You really choose your combo. Waakye originates from the northern parts of Ghana.
The most famous place in Accra to eat Waakye is Auntie Munnie’s in Labone. The joint even has its own facebook page!
2- Grilled goat and goat kebabs ( “Suya” )
The greatest and safest food to have on the go is the grilled meat! Particularly goat ( that we do not really eat in Europe maybe because it has a strong smell). Goat can be roasted or grilled (depending on the joint) and eaten with fried rice, jollof rice, plain rice or just like that, with nothing aside. Meat galore! :) Truly delicious! especially with the local pepper powder sprinkled on it or the mashed green and red pepper on the side.Yummy!
Next time you are in Ghana, check those out! They can be found almost everywhere.
I’ll finish with the famous “one man thousand”, a tiny fish that people deep fry and eat with kenkey and pepper (not the black pepper that we know but some local pepper crushed with ginger and other ingredients). It is called like that because it is so tiny that one person can literaly eat thousands of them. Honestly guys this thing is to die for!!👌 I remember stopping by to buy these and eating the whole pack before reaching home! without anything else, just raw one man thousand. Yeah that’s how much I like it!
Buy them fresh by the road side in volta region they taste better.
Take a look at this video that will tell you more about this tiny fish and also give you a glimpse of Atimpoku area with its serene and lovely lake.
Awww… writing this article really made me feel nostalgic! I cannot wait to go back to Ghana where I left pieces of my heart. I imagine just being there, eating all those delicious foods and going to those deserted beaches where kids dance half naked and jump in the waves while I’m chilling, reading my favourite book.
Dear Ghana, I love you and your food (not all of it but most) :) !
Please try those dishes and let us know how you like them! See you around my people!
