With 2016 drawing to a close and both leagues reaching what could be considered their season finale points, (The WBL ending with a Christmas Special and The IWA closing the curtain with Ms. Tien preparing to launch her first wrestling show) we here at No Sell Magazine are proud to present our winners of the 2016 ICON Awards, a designation reserved for the talent who not only had the best in-ring performances but also had the greatest impact on their respective leagues during the year.
WBL
#1 Choppa Loc: If there was ever a time when Loc wrestled we can’t seem to remember it, but what we’ll never forget is how his voice and his commentary set the tone for the WBL and in a way Loc has become the voice of the soul of the WBL. And this foul mouthed delinquent who isn’t afraid to say it like it is, is poised to be 2017′s ICON as well, all it would take is for him to book one classic, game changing, pay per view while Nielsens is away unofficially forcing Loc to take the reigns of the WBL full time. He’ll get his chance at Bootleg Bodybags and we’re eager to see the results.
#2 7 Mile Greg: Simply put, in ring, in the WBL, nobody does it better. During his career Greg has headline more PPVs than anyone in his league, knocked out more legends than anyone and it is impossible to imagine the WBL without him. He’s now neck deep in the final chapter of the Intergalactic War and is practically already guaranteed a Hall of Fame spot. Greg is a lynch pin in the roster, coming with the promise of a 5 star match whenever he steps into the ring.
IWA
#1 Ms. Tien: By now some must be growing tired of hearing her name and seeing her face, but Ms. Tien deserves her moment of shine because she, single-handedly, revived an entire wrestling promotion, convinced legendary wrestlers to come out of retirement and a possibly more incredible feat, managed to actually become the first Tien to really be over with the fans. In a way the story of the newly revived IWA is her story, and as we watch the league change in 2017 we will watch her change with it.
#2 The Unborn: Ms. Tien laid the foundation and The Unborn built on it. No other wrestler in the young league managed to drive so much narrative, and throw as many wrenches in the program as The Unborn did. From his dramatic debut with Dr. Weiss, to his decimating of Moses Gunsmoke and forcing Takahara to forgo all inhibitions and embrace pure unholy rage in order to beat him, The Unborn has been the catalyst for almost every bit of motion in the IWA. And he’s done all this without saying a word and while losing only one match.
