Some time ago there was one of those psa posts that basically went "if you feel like you have to walk on eggshells while writing a character of different race/culture/whatever, then you're doing it wrong" and I agree, you're first of all writing a human and putting said fictional human on a woke pedestal is not the way to do this, unless you work for Disney maybe.
But please, do some research first.
Now, I don't like to speak for people of different backgrounds as me because I, by definition, don't have the full picture of what they deal with. So, for the sake of this rant, I'll focus on the plight that are characters whose nationality happens to be the same as mine.
This might sound like rocket science to some, but Italy is a real country populated by real people. Every once in a while I'm recommended a blog for a mafia OC (not the video game, unfortunately) or some other misunderstood rogue muse in fancy clothing whose quirky trait is that "they're italian uwu".
First of all, you're fucking boring and need to stick your stereotypes where the sun doesn't shine.
Second, do you even realize who you're actually writing about? Obviously you don't, otherwise you'd know what the real mafia, not the one in the movies, is about; we're talking those who blackmail honest people into paying money for 'safety', who poison the land and set forests ablaze for money, who settle their arguments in front of schools and, among the rest, predate on young people in precarious family situations to increase their ranks and are willing to toss a child in a bin full of acid to get rid of them. I see you going all B.L.M. then be horny on main over those same people who in the real world partake in human trafficking and force immigrants in working in conditions of slavery and I have to say, you've got some balls to act like you didn't slip on a giant turd when it's pointed out to you.
But at this point nothing surprises me anymore. Back to the point, do some fucking research. I know that education in many countries is going backwards but a dictionary is all you need to figure out the difference between language, dialects and idioms. In Italy, we speak Italian (with some bilingualism in some areas). There's many dialects and many different ways to say the same thing in each region and for crying out loud, people from the North and the South are perfectly capable of understanding each other. It's been a while since the 40s, you know? Education is free and accessible to all. We're not illiterate or stupid.
I have been approached and schooled on my own language on this hellsite and basically demanded I proved that Rook was italian enough on one occasion by people who at best have spent 20 minutes on YouTube. I'm not joking.
These days I just skim over but I can't help rolling my eyes whenever the RPC goes full activist about representation but then fails to realize that Super Mario isn't a viable reference for your writing. If folks can't properly convey a person from one (1) European country, I have my doubts any minority can be treated as more than just a cute aesthetic.
