The rain was always annoying, but Rook had to turn down the umbrella this time.
"Keep it. Five can still dispel the clouds." she explained, "I'll just be more duck just this once."
If anything, she could always have Five try out what it was like to be slapped by her wings in that state. There was no doubt he was wearing another of his boring suits for the occasion, nothing of value would be lost in the process.
"But I'm glad we have our best ambassadors on the case."
"Of course we are." Lucien replied, "Still, let's keep our guard up. I'm sure Ratchet wants to personally thank us for the time spent together, especially you, Antonio."
The video was a good reminder that not even Ratchet should be underestimated, especially with revenge motivating him. He definitely had something in store for them, though Lucien was glad Leofric could at least give them some protection against Five. He wasn't looking forward to dealing with his toxins again.
Fae in the meantime was leaning over the edge as everyone else caught up.
"One battle cat coming up! It's like watching Tails from the old days!" she commented, offering her free hand to Willow.
"I can see the resemblance." the cyborg replied, before nodding at the camera, "I will not. I trust you, Simon."
Erica was glad to hear Travis had appreciated the peculiar ride. Now that he was also accepting her little gift, she took off her cap and retrieved a black sharpie from within.
"Let's make it official!" She proceeded to write MANGLER 3000 on the bat, "There. Get a nice dent in it and it'll be perfect."
That was the true sign of a good fight. Erica looked up once the protective spell was in place. Now they were truly ready.
Sensing Leofric's spell as well, Five braced himself for the imminent clash. He had asked for it, after all, but he wasn't regretting it even though they were heavily outnumbered. Ratchet was the only actually making him regret it so far. There really was no need to rile everyone up even more.
"Oh yeah? What are you gonna do about it, uh?" Ratchet pointed at Russell as he kept with his taunting, "Take one step forward and we'll take it out on him! He'll turn into a shrimp by the time we're done."
"Quiet."
Five nudged his annoying ally out of the way with his cane, before leaning on it. He might not have looked as menacing as before, but his sword still hung loosely around his waist, ready to be used and it looked as sharp as ever.
"I must say, that's a tempting offer. Especially if you consider this entire conundrum to be his doing."
Many emotions crossed Ratchet's face then. His confidence in being able to talk crap while cowering behind his boss was overcome by betrayal and then a healthy dose of uneasiness as Five just as eagerly threw him under the bus.
"You see," Five continued, still ignoring Ratchet entirely, "Ratchet here has indeed decided to do a little experiment without consulting me, which eventually led to...that. Russell's state doesn't benefit anyone, so I summoned you here to retrieve him. And that's about it."
He of course wasn't going to take responsibility for what had happened to Russell. The blame was part of Ratchet's punishment as well and now more than ever, Five didn't care to take his parts.
"So your hands are totally clean." Rook said, glaring at Five, "And we're just supposed to collect Russell and leave? Did we hit your head too hard last time?"
"Yeah, boss. We have them where you wanted them. We can fuck them up!" Ratchet complained, "I can get that started for you too. I'm on a roll today!"
"You need to learn the value of silence, Ratchet." Five snapped.
"This is a very awkward hostage exchange." Willow said, getting her sword out.
"I mean, if they're offering to give back Russell, we should at least try to, right?" Erica asked.
They could probably outrun Five and Ratchet while they kept bickering.
"That's a good point," Bill said. He definitely didn't need to be suddenly burned to bones while they were dealing with Five.
Of course, his skin and muscles would come back with nightfall, but he needed to have them for every moment that he could when it came to this kind of situation.
"You can count on us for that," Antonio said, before he looked over at Lucien and nodded, "Good idea. That video showed us that he's learned since last time and he would definitely be holding a vendetta against us for what we did to him."
He knew that all too well, even if he did feel that Ratchet deserved the treatment. Maybe this time, they would get a chance to get rid of it for real.
Along with the spell, Leofric's mind had also turned towards his sword and any antidotes he might need for this potential battle. While he had some on his bandolier, the rest were in his coat, and he needed to think about them if he wanted to retrieve them quickly. His own physical shield was held on a steady arm, and as always, his eyes looked like they could bore into Five and Ratchet's very souls.
Right as Fae finished speaking, Antonio made the final jump up to the top. He did pant a little bit, but then he quickly straightened himself up again, not wanting to appear weak in front of their possible opponents.
"You can trust me," Simon agreed, as he watched Travis emerge with Erica.
Travis grinned when Erica wrote on the bat, officially marking what its purpose was.
"I can certainly try to," Travis said, "Hopefully Ratchet's skull will be a good starting point."
He had already started to take a step towards Russell, intending to take his brother back before more damage could be done.
"Wait," Simon had warned him first, "We don't know if..."
He trailed off when Ratchet spoke up, confirming his suspicion that Ratchet might try to hurt Russell more if anyone got too close, and they didn't know what kind of traps he might have set up yet.
It seemed that Travis also knew to stop when told, for he remained where he was. But he did tap the bat against the palm of his hand, eager for to put it to use when he got the chance.
"You sick piece of shit," Travis commented then, "Haven't you done enough?"
"It definitely smells like it," Bill added. But even he fell into silence, mainly out of curiosity, when Five spoke up. It was actually almost amusing to see him tell Ratchet to be quiet.
"Hmmm," Simon couldn't hide the thoughtful hum that escaped through his nose as he pondered what Five said. Maybe it really was true. Five did appear surprised in the video footage, and he had just been getting an ice cream.
Maybe, just maybe, this kidnapping hadn't been planned by Five; it had just happened and he went along with it on seeing an opportunity. That didn't change the fact that he had still done this.
Leofric seemed to have the same idea as Willow, for he retrieved his own sword from his coat and held it in his hand. He already had the growing suspicion that despite Five's offer to just take Russell and go, it wouldn't be as simple as that.
"Well, seeing as they're having a lover's spat, let's go for it," Bill suggested to Erica then, "And I got just the tools for the job."
With that, Bill's shadowy tentacles got to work, darting their across the ground towards Russell, intending to grab him and reel him over before Five and Ratchet noticed what he was up to. Even if there any possible traps in their path, the extra limbs would set them off without anyone coming to harm at the very least.
"That's right. So let's stick to the golden rule and make sure Ratchet doesn't touch us."
It was for the best. They had yet to actually see how that weirdo fought and there was quite the range between a couple of traps sprinkled around Five's old hideout and the device currently digging in Russell's arm. Ratchet still had a chance to surprise them even without their help.
Still, Rook didn't hesitate to take the lead. One funny movement and her hands would find their way around Five's neck. She wasn't going to allow whatever little show he had prepared for the occasion.
Taking advantage of that, Fae moved as well, positioning herself as far away from Bill as possible. His umbrella wouldn't do much against her weapon if they bumped into each other.
"Looks like we're going to have to split." Fae mused, eyeing the two bickering idiots. Ratchet looked too confident for someone who had been beaten a bunch. She didn't feel confident taking a single step forward at the moment.
But Travis did, so Erica joined him and stopped in her tracks when Russell was threatened.
"Whatever it is, it smells really bad. This time we should leave him hanging over a ravine. See if he likes it." Erica growled softly at Ratchet, a simple yet very effective threat that got him to back off a little, "Yeah. That's more like it. You're in for a mean lesson."
Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to stop him. The argument provided a convenient, but too brief distraction. The devious shadowy tentacles were eventually noticed, causing Ratchet to harshly yank his arm back. A thick web of tripwires became visible for a moment, prompting Erica to actually pull Travis back a little.
"That's right! You're free to take Russell, if you can get him!" Ratchet said, before he put on the loudest reflective sunglasses ever, "And the best part? You all walked into my trap like idiots!"
Ratchet's gloating caused more of his intricate trap to flicker into view. Willow pulled her katana closer to herself as she eyed the ground. It was an unfortunate day to not be wearing her usual coat. That wire certainly looked sharp.
"And this brings me to the second part of our arrangement." Five said then, reaching for his sword, "I couldn't possibly lure you all in the same place and just let you go like that. I have a reputation to maintain, you know."
"No, you absolutely can just do that and piss off." Rook snapped back.
"Well, anyway, I crave a fight and Ratchet wants to play extreme hopscotch with the ones who used him for target practice." Five replied, "You may fight your way out of this or give up now and spare me the trouble of chasing you. You still owe me a refill, you know. And after everything we've been through, Rook, you could at least share your stash."
Being a man who loved pouring gasoline over fire, Five topped his disgusting provocation with an unapologetic smirk. If Rook didn't care about being called a traitor to everything they represented, then that would get through to her. She actually believed a bunch of monsters could be her family, implying an ulterior motive was bound to set her off.
"You fucking asshole..." Rook raised her sword and summoned her armor, "Leofric, let's kick his ass."
Ratchet once again yanked at the wires, only for them to cut right through Rook's body. His trap was entirely ineffective on her, but he could however rejoice in the fact she wasn't interested in him at the moment as she continued charging at Five. His attitude was back in a blink.
Lucien raised his stance then. "Leave him to me. His arms won't be attached to the rest of him for long if I can have a say in this."
He had great projects for Ratchet. He would start from the left arm, then work his way up the right one. Ratchet would have to beg for his life after everything he had done to Russell. But first, he had to take a breath.
"...It's about time we have another talk, Christopher."
Power traveled through Lucien's words. His influence would wash over Ratchet like water flooding from a river. But instead of dragging his mind down into the abyss, it all came bouncing back. Ratchet looked like a man who had just outsmarted the devil with a pair of earplugs.
"Sorry, I can't hear you!" Ratchet tapped at his ear, before yanking both arms back, "Now let's see you all bleed!"
"I suggest we scramble." Willow said.
So, which one puts the 'ace' in 'menace', Rook, Erica, or Willow?
Fae points at her fellow ladies, all eating cake for totally unrelated reasons.
"Buddy, look at them. It's a team effort. Now excuse me, I'm going to steal some cake!"
She clearly has no trouble being a menace herself.
"Do they, though? Diviners gotta eat too."
It wouldn't have been unheard of. Many mages were known for putting their abilities to use in less than traditional ways. She too did just that by offering to investigate local paranormal activity for a fee. There was hardly anything dishonorable in that. Some even sounded just as pretentious, which only made Rook more compelled to bother them with her nonsense. This guy definitely had a way of introducing himself.
"Most gods aren't very chatty, I'm sure it's nothing personal." She pressed a hand to her chest, "Me? I don't need anything specifically. It's just that your presence was noticed so I figured I should welcome you to the city. You're not here to use your bloodhounding talents on anyone, right?"
With their recent luck with visitors, it was a fair question. They had more than filled the comically evil hunters quota. Someone had to ensure they weren't getting more of that nonsense.
If the man were offended at the suggestion he was going to harass someone, he gave no indication. If anything, he kept his smile friendly and even. He was noticed, after all, so he should play nice with the locals. Who knows how long he might be in this city?
"No, nothing of that sort. I do have standards that usually involve not bothering people who have done nothing to warrant such snooping. Now, for example, shady hedge mages who make it a habit of kidnapping folks or disrupting life in general, sure, I might be hired to keep an eye on them for others to deal with."
"But mostly, people hire me to locate things, research things, investigate things. Things, usually. Creatures, sometimes. People, not often. People are complicated and messy, and I'm no enforcer." He almost said hero, but maybe it didn't make a difference, as he wasn't that either.
"I must say, though, you have a good eye. I wasn't trying to hide myself entering this city, but I don't make a fanfare either. Would you be interested in my card, if you have need of my services? ... A magician's gotta eat too." A hopeful smile half-cocked.
Well, that was definitely a great sales pitch. Rook had to admit she was a little impressed and figured she could appreciate the little joke as well.
"You got a card too? That's fancy."
She couldn't say no to that now. Watching this guy at work could have been fun, for the right fee.
"Oh, that wasn't hard. I also get paid to find things and creatures. It usually ends with me negotiating with ghosts around these parts, but I can tell a mage apart in a crowd."
Her marks made her aware of many things. Although they weren't something to be discussed with a stranger. But as it looked like they weren't going to clash for the time being, Rook figured there would be nothing wrong with getting this guy's help. It was always good to have an extra pair of eyes out and she might as well find out whether she was undercharging for her own services.
"Actually, I'd like that. I've been looking for certain special items, with little result. If you don't mind working with potentially cursed artifacts, I guess we could discuss your fee."
"You know, I didn't consider that part. It is raining."
Perhaps she would do a rewatch as well while she dried her wings. Five was a real pain in the ass. Rook had a feeling he had considered how much of a nuisance the ruin could be for her before using it as a beacon.
"I'm glad you guys understand the importance of settling this with empathy and diplomacy." she then added. Lucien looked even more pleased to hear that.
"Indeed, we are. I'm Empathy," he began, before motioning to Antonio, "while he's Diplomacy."
"And I will provide my point of view as well." Willow reassured.
"I especially want that." Rook told her.
Ratchet was going to regret setting foot back in the city. Even if that meant she was only allowed to punch him, Rook wanted this to be a night to remember for him.
"Hell yeah they are! This is awesome!" Fae's enthusiasm could have propelled her upwards. Instead, she summoned a spear made of pure light and used it to keep her balance while quite literally running up the front of the building. "If it's always this wild, I'll have to drop by more often!"
"And I suppose you can always count on the Torchic powers." Lucien replied, before emerging from the fog, "Excuse me."
Once turned fully solid, Lucien raised his arms, the cuffs lightning up right away. Levitation was a spell that clearly belonged to the fae, but unlike the full blooded fairy ahead, he preferred it when the ground was firmly under his feet.
The moment of hesitation allowed Willow to aim her grappling hook and follow her double. It almost looked like a boring exercise from the way her gaze wandered to the others on the way up. But it looked like she had another surprise for Simon, as she retrieved a small camera and tossed it at a wall. The little spherical device would blend perfectly in the dark.
"It occurred to me you might appreciate a second point of view." Willow said, sending a link to the camera feed, "I feel much safer with you watching our backs."
Meanwhile, Lucien had found the courage to get himself up in the air. His ascent was far more gracious than Rook's, who had resorted to breaking her way through the front door to head up on the roof. Some property damage was acceptable in this case.
Only Erica was missing now. She was always happy to hang out with Travis, but they had a street fight to get back to.
"Hold on tight! We're taking the fast lane!"
Which coincidentally meant literally sliding down into the abyss. They were back into the city in no time and Erica was already biting through one of the bananas.
"These are real good. Oh! One more thing." One large shadow hand emerged from the ground holding a baseball bat, "So you won't have to touch Five or Ratchet."
It was best not to take their chances there.
With his audience finally gathering, Five figured it was time for him to stand up. He had done his best to arrange Russell's seat. The blanket did absolutely nothing against the toxic cocktail cursing through his veins, but that was the closest thing to goodwill Five was willing to show. Kicking Ratchet off the roof unfortunately wasn’t an option. He needed a punching bag.
"Look, Ratchet. The whole family's here— Where's Rook?"
Right on cue, Rook burst through the hatch then, coming to an abrupt halt while the flames retreated back into her body. She let out a sigh and wiped some ash off her face.
"Why the fuck are you sitting up here? Freaking weirdo." Rook grumbled, leaning on her knees, "What... What did you do to Russell?"
"Looks like we got a vertically challenged bird on our hands, boss!" Ratchet mocked her, "You guys all look terrible! Did we catch you at a bad time?"
Erica's ears flickered, already fed up with Ratchet's incessant screeching. "I vote for throwing him off the building."
"I suppose it's perfectly fit for finding Five and kicking his ass to oblivion, and then we can save that as a post rescue treat," Bill suggested.
Seeing that Rook had appeared to be getting more and mor soaked, and knowing her affinities, Bill then offered the umbrella without another word. Now that the sun was significantly blocked out, he didn't need it so urgently.
"I can accept being diplomacy," Antonio said, with a small smirk, "And I am looking to seeing your angle on all of this as well, Willow."
Antonio was at least looking forward to that part, even if he really didn't want to have to deal with Five again, especially not so soon. But it had to be done, and at least getting to torture Ratchet would provide some carthasis after.
"It'll certainly be good to see you more often," Bill said, before he then used his shadows as a grappling hook to rappel himself upwards, just he had done during their last battle all those months ago.
"Yes, it would be," Leofric agreed. He then got back to muttering the spell in preparation.
He then became slightly transparent, and jumped through the wall, disappearing from sight entirely. It seemed that he had his own plan for ascending.
Antonio had taken to jumping, using his stick and his magic as footholds, as well as any hollows in the walls of the tower. He had certainly approved, given that his movements were very fluid and his leaps were high. Claws also dug into the wall, leaving indents as they did so. They had gotten sharper since the last encounter.
"You can count on me to keep an eye out," Simon promised, as the camera was set up, "Don't you worry there, Willow."
It would especially be useful if Five or Ratchet had any hidden traps or henchman waiting in the shadows to get involved. Simon would keep all eyes and cameras open for anything of the sort.
"I'm more than ready," Travis said, but that still didn't stop him from letting out a surprised yell as they started to slide. He quickly got used to however, taking the trip in stride, "Well, this is definitely better than flying on a plane."
He also looked pleased to get the baseball bat, admiring and taking a quick practice swing before he got moving again.
"Oh yeah, it's all coming together," he said with a little grin, "Let's see if I can get some mangling done this time."
The first thing that hit Bill was smell of Russell's blood once he made it up to the top. Some of it was still dripping from under the cuff, before the stains faded
"Bloody hell," he only said, wincing, before he glanced up at first, "What you have done? Turned the poor lad into a lab experiment?"
It wasn't one particular poison that Russell was suffering from, it was a concoction of multiple, and Bill could hardly tell where one started and the other began. He supposed it was a blessing Russell was asleep, given that he most likely wasn't feeling any pain right now. But by the way his eyes moved beneath the lids, he was experiencing some awfully intense dreams.
"You keep her name out of your mouth!" Antonio snapped at Ratchet, his tail twitching in irritation.
Leofric finished the spell just as he rose up through the wall, like it hadn't even been there. A transparent dome of blue light had started to surround everyone in range. When that was done, Leofric reached into his coat before his arm emerged with his shield.
"I'd say it's a good time to kick your ass," Bill said, before he looked at Erica, "Nah, that's too good for him. He needs something a bit more painful."
"We can save that for after this," Leofric suggested.
"Hey, Five, how about you just let us kick Ratchet's ass, then we can take Russell back and let you have a day or so head start before we come back for you?" Bill said.

"I mean, if they're offering to give back Russell, we should at least try to, right?" Erica asked.
They could probably outrun Five and Ratchet while they kept bickering.
"It's there to be watched on a rainy day. Go right ahead."
It was strange material for a family photo book, but it could go between the pictures from the camping trip and whatever they were going to do together next. Five had brought them closer, after all. The times they were going to keep humiliating him deserved the recognition.
"I guess I'm not that lousy of a boss after all. Four out of five families is still a good result." Rook said with a shrug, "Well, I can't tell you guys what to do to Ratchet. Just make sure not to do anything too brutal to him while I'm going to be very busy kicking Five's butt."
Lucien couldn't help a small malicious grin, glad to be quietly enabled. Ratchet wasn't going to get away with hurting Russell like that just because he was a regular horrible human being.
"You heard the boss. We must be on our best behavior." Lucien said.
Ratchet would regret ever crawling out of the ditch the Twins had left him in.
"Now that one sounds like a joke!" Fae chimed in.
"Your ride will be there shortly." Willow announced. The shadows were already gathering by Erica, "Ah. I certainly hope that won't be the case."
Losing a limb, even temporarily, wasn't an experience Russell needed to get acquainted with. She would do anything possible to avoid that.
"The hope is that between all the tools we have, we can find a way to pry it off before it comes to that." Rook said then, "Ratchet doesn't really enchant his stuff and we already have some experience with it. Hopefully, we can spare him that at least."
But they'd deal with that once they got there. They first had to reach to their painfully obvious destination without causing too much alarm while Fae lit up the whole street.
"That's right! You gotta do things with style!" Which included defying gravity wherever simply getting around an obstacle was just too boring. "Nice grippers, Bill!"
Lucien needed none of that. He would leave Fae to her sliding and gliding from one pole to another and simply faded into the fog to keep up with the group.
"Come on, Antonio. You don't want Rook to curl your tail."
The taunt was a little moment of lightness while they hurried ahead. Rook's magic was as effective as it was unstable and none of them wanted to get caught in her path. But with stealth out of the window, the occasional set of burning fingerprints could be overlooked. The flurry of flames advanced, careful not to melt everything in her path.
"Eh, and I thought Willow had big pockets." Erica grinned, before her nose caught on the scent of bananas, "Thanks. I'll be right back!"
Right as Erica retreated into the abyss, a pair of hands emerged to take the bananas from Travis' hands. That was an excellent offering and with some luck, they would help Five make another swift exit once they were done with him.
"Hello, Big Big Bro! It's good to see you." Erica greeted Travis with a smile that was a little too wide as usual, "The others are taking the long way, we'll take the shortcut. Grab on!"
Sitting atop the ominous building. Five was enjoying a mint flavored popsicle in anticipation of the meeting with those approaching life essences he had learned to loathe.
"Well, it is a rainy day, but I will have to save it for another one," Bill said, as he looked up at the swirling clouds. Leofric and Erica certainly weren't wrong. There was something strange in its scent.
It was certainly wasn't a normal storm. That was for sure.
"And hey, there is a silver lining in all of this," Bill suggested, "We'll get more material for the Fam Kicking Ass compilation, and the album. It's one way to see it."
It seemed that Bill was feeling fairly confident about how a confrontation could end, despite everything that had been discussed moments before.
"You're not lousy at all," Leofric only said, "And we'll make sure to save you a chance to get your own back at him as well after you have dealt with Five."
Antonio was wearing a devious little smirk of his own at Rook's indirect blessing. He was certainly looking forward to making Ratchet pay. If anything, the man deserved it for not learning anything from last time, and he had to be taught an even harsher lesson.
"I'll show him best behaviour all right," Antonio replied then.
Fantasising would be need to be done later however. Right now, it was time to get going.
"It's a bit of both," Bill said to Fae, with a small grin of his own.
"Glad to hear it, I'll be ready," Travis said, with a nod. It seemed that he wasn't too worried about what said Travel might entail.
Perhaps he figured it was worth it when it came to kicking some ass and saving his brother.
"That's what I'm also hoping for," Bill said. It would be a last resort, and with any luck, it wouldn't need to be used, "But the sooner we get there, the sooner we can sort this whole mess out."
As he swung, he smiled at Fae.
"Thank you, they are pretty neat, aren't they?" Bill said.
"I still prefer that to freezing," Antonio said, as he looked over, impressed at the way Rook moved among the flames, "But I do see your point."
"It's all about how to modify a space to your needs," Leofric said, "But we will see you soon."
He would soon get his shield out once they were close enough, but he was already summoning the protective spell for the fam to have when they got up to Five.
Travis let out a low impressed whistle at how quickly Erica had gotten through to him, allowing her to take the bananas from his hands.
"Good to see you too, Sports Elf," Travis said. Despite the circumstances, he couldn't help but smile at the greeting, "Sounds good to me."
With that, he took Erica's hand.
"Ready when you are."
Russell didn't have much to say about the current matter, due to still being unconscious.
He had been placed on a folding chair with a blanket over him. While his body was still unmoving thanks to the mix of toxins keeping him numb and sedated, his eyes still moved with a harsh intensity beneath the lids. It seemed the dreams he was having were not pleasant ones.
The current sight of him would possibly be a rather confusing one for the found fam to say the least.
"Surprises are fun. But if you let me know ahead of time, I can get a few snacks for the trip. Portable AC needs to stay hydrated as well, regardless of whether I'm affected by the weather."
There was nothing wrong with both of them traveling comfortably. With Rook putting her tools away, Edmund figured he deserved a little reward and pulled out a small flask. He made to take a sip, paused, then floated down to tap the flask against Shade's radio.
"Fer good fortune." Now, he could have a drink.
"I sure am but it's the rules." Rook slung the tool bag over her shoulder, "Alright. I'm ready to get all of us out of your hair. I'll need a few minutes to set things up on my end. Then you should hear back from me."
"Don't hesitate to speak up about those needs as well, hm? It isn't as if I would deny you something so essential as hydration." It wasn't like he didn't want her to be comfortable.
"Would this be more of a toast or the christening of a ship?" It didn't seem surprising to think this old pirate ghost may be a superstitious type.
"Those rules just don't allow you to have any fun do they?" he crooned. "I expect I should be hearing you shortly then and if not... well, I always know where to find you."
"Don't worry, I remember our talk about the importance of communication."
It was just nice to take her time packing up something nice. She believed in fulfilling snacks over a bottle of lukewarm water or a swig of rum. Edmund was of very different advice, of course. He only spared Shade a glance at the question.
"Aye." Wishing the newest gizmo a long service was a good reason to have a drink. The flask was passed around while Rook eased her radio back in its box for safer transport.
"I'm sure it'll go as planned. Stay tuned!"
The pirates saluted as they followed Rook back in her pocket. The portal closed but the connection remained. It wouldn't be too long before the radio would begin playing music.
"Guess what! You can listen to some radio stations too now!"
It was indeed a very important finding.
"Yes. It's uh... It's all like a pomegranate." The fruit that would help her explanation was dug out from the pile and sliced in half. "There are a bunch of universes, worlds, pocket dimensions, and all that space between those bits is where most of the shadows are. There isn't a place without darkness, so all the dark nooks are connected and can be used to go wherever you want."
It was a simple and delicious explanation for sure. But it showed why she wasn't too concerned about being stuck there.
"I think you're really cute. A cute name would suit you!" It was also the least confusing name out of the bunch. "Yep. They're small trees, more like a shrub, I guess. They all have little flowers that can be white, pink or purple. Purple's my favorite color!"
Her ever present purple tank top attested to that.
It listened very attentively to her explanation, the fruit it was holding being all but forgotten. This was, after all, someone from another world explaining how other worlds worked and all the expansive things that existed outside of the frankly already very expansive world it lived in.
"That soundssss amazing! So you can go anywhere at all?"
That sounded like some kind of fantasy. It would love to be able to go places like that.
And now she was saying it was cute??
"R-really?" It sunk its teeth into the piece of fruit and just held it in front of its mouth as a way of venting its flustered reaction, vibrating a little before it composed itself. "You're really nice, Erica. Being named after flowers suits you."
"Pretty much. There are some places I shouldn't go like space 'cause there's no air there and all that. Though I learned how to drive a mini shuttle, so I still go up there sometimes."
That sure was a lot to dump on anyone. Erica was simply happy to talk about her adventures, having at one point been stuck in just one world too. Still, she tilted her head at the sudden reaction. If it didn't like being called cute, it really wasn't helping the impression. It reminded her of Smokey whenever he tried to bite into anything.
"Thanks, I think my mother picked a nice name too." She was lucky. Most elven names were a mouthful. "I've got some nicknames too. My friend calls me Tails sometimes."
But as fun as sitting there and talking was, Erica needed to get back on her feet. She hopped off the wall and started stretching.
"So, what do you do for fun around here?"
"I'm sure Shade has already considered that. He has perfected stomping to an art." Rook said, "We also have footage of that. I should find a way to send a clip to Five. Like a little digital card that says 'Wish You Were Here'."
It would have been hilarious to also make a second copy to send to her father as a kind reminder that he better watch his back even while there was no contact between them. She would look into that once they had the confirmation Russell was going to be okay.
"Remember, I dared do something a bit more chill and they all ran for the hills." Rook added, rolling her eyes, "Which is something to have gripes about when they're already fucking dead."
But there was no point in getting worked up about that at this time. They were up against Ratchet and Five, not the rest of his dumbass family. The general disgust among their group was enough motivation already.
"We should really consider making it a reality. Five probably wouldn't mind having an authentic eunuch around." Lucien stated.
"That should have sounded like a joke, you know." Fae told him, "But we'll see to that when we get there. The best torture takes form in the heat of the moment."
"Your remark extends to you as well." Willow mocked her, "Bananas are acceptable. Get ready and we shall handle the logistics."
Erica was definitely within earshot to know what she was expected to do.
"He has the strength but he still has no taste." Willow pointed out, "Being able to lift Russell doesn't exactly require much strength however."
"It's still enough." Rook replied, "I hope we'll be able to get rid of that thing on our own. Ratchet probably changed the combination. Russell has been through enough without us making it worse."
"In that case, we'll just have to go with Antonio's idea and do everything we can to keep Ratchet's crap jewelry away from us." Fae said then, "Come on, Rook. You've got Leofric and Bill here too. You can do this."
Erica nodded along. Rook's self doubt liked to show up at the worst times, even after all they had been through together, but they didn't mind reminding her they could take on anything.
"I think it'll be easier this time." the elf added, "Yeah, it's not right. We should really check it out."
"It's all right. I'm about to locate Five's new hideout." Willow was cut off as the lightning struck, "...Or I suppose we could investigate the ominous building in the distance."
Sometimes magic really clashed with her groove. Nevertheless, she straightened her coat, ready to go. If Five was so impatient to see them, then they better not keep him waiting.
"Then let's roll!" Fae took the lead then, dashing and sliding along a rainbow path, "Every joke has been made but you go right ahead, guys!"
Willow placed a hand on her katana, before following. "Tell me, Simon. Have you heard of a game called Ghostrunner?"
Rook motioned Bill to go ahead. "It's best if you go first. I wouldn't want to get you all toasted before we even see Five."
Erica finally got herself back on the ground. "You watch out for smoke machines, Leofric. I'll go get our token human."
With Russell gone, they needed Travis even more. Erica hoped that would discourage Five from doing his worse and that she would get to see Travis mangle Ratchet like he deserved.
"Oooh, I'll need to watch that sometime. Maybe when I next happen to be in a bad mood," Bill said, "Which could very well be rather soon if we're going to be dealing with Five again. And that could be a good 'fuck you' to send him."
Antonio simply nodded in agreement. He also liked that idea, but he was caught up in pondering just what they were going to do once they reached Five.
"It just goes to show how cool you really are," Bill said, "Assholes just can't handle it."
Antonio did let out a snarky little chuckle at Lucien's comment.
"Well, if anything, it might give him a reason to give up on life," Antonio then said, "And then he would be one less probably for everyone to deal with."
"I suppose that is true enough," Leofric said thoughtfully, "Most of it does happen without much planning."
"No problem," Travis said. He was quick to grab the bananas he had had sitting in the fruit bowl, and moved to place them near the shadows as instructed. If he could be there to help, he would be, "Right, beam me up please!"
"We can all agree on that," Simon said, "And that's saying something when it's coming from me as well."
"If worst comes to worst, we can probably find some way to cut it off without cutting Russell's arm off as well," Bill suggested, "And you sure can do it, Rook, especially with us with you. Fae's right."
He decided that he wasn't about to say that if that didn't work, then perhaps severing Russell's arm off could also be an option. Sure, it would rewind, and hopefully without the cuff still attached, but it was still unpleasant to think about.
"I did bring my shield with me," Leofric then said, "Along with my sword. They're both in my coat, which as we all know, stores more than what many perceive to be possible. If a gadget bypasses Antonio's telekinetic powers, then its momentum should be stopped by that."
Leofric nodded.
"Yes, I believe we should," he agreed.
"Good to know," Simon said, "I'm also working on that as we spea..."
Simon found himself trailing off when he saw the way the lightning had lit up that particular building. It was like it had been done on purpose.
"That's probably a good idea," Simon then agreed, once he found his voice again.
"Well, if he wanted to get our attention, he certainly got it," Bill said, before he looked at Rook, "Works for me. We'll see you there. I'm not going to joke, Fae, I'm just going to say I love the rainbow road aesthetic. Amazing track."
"Oh I definitely have," Simon said, "I have I'm going to like where this is going."
And he could keep an eye out on the other cameras for potential obstacles or possible threats while Willow did her thing.
"I'll keep an eye, an ear, and my nose out for any for those, Erica. Thank you for the warning," Leofric said, "Save travels, both by yourself, and when you return."
With that, he went to move on forward. No more time could be wasted. Bill used his shadowy tentacles to move himself forward, rappelling like Spiderman himself. Leofric simply phased through vehicles and other obstacles like they weren't there, and Antonio used his feline attributes to easily leap and dash over everything.
It wouldn't take long to reach the building in any case.
"It's fine, really. I keep saying the city is my turf, I might as well start acting like it."
The forest had to be protected since Rook would have really minded seeing all the owls leave. Telling the ghosts to make a slightly longer trip around would be hardly any issue. They would be delighted, if anything.
"Well, it can't be helped. I'm a hunter. It's never good news when any of us shows up. I'm not aggressive like that guy, or most of them really, but you never know at first glance."
Some actually found her fluffy getup intimidating. But it wasn't that big of a loss in the end. She could always visit her family after her nightly round.
Rook tilted her head as well at the response, a motion that looked quite amusing while wearing her helmet. It wasn't much of an answer, but it still had her intrigued.
"Really? Alright." She didn't seem to mind the lack of an answer. It was just like that with some spirits. "I guess I've been a hunter for nine years now. It's...really something to say out loud."
Time does fly when you're having fun and such.
Her turf. Hm~ Well, if Rook decided she wanted to keep the forest save as well, Eule isn't going to complain. She doesn't understand being afraid of Rook only because she was a hunter though. So far she had been nothing but nice. Neither does the hunter seem like someone who would hunt anyone without a really good reason.
" Ah... I understand... If it makes you feel better... I am not scared of you~ You seem... like a very nice and reasonable person, Rook~ "
But it was also very hard to make Eule afraid. While not deprived of emotions... they seem to be a bit... 'feeble'. Still, the spirit smiles at Rook as she walks alongside her.
Eule but noticed the hunters tilted head through the owls eyes and guessed that her answer wasn't exactly... a satisfying one. But she can't help it. There can't be a better answer if she didn't knew much about herself to begin with. Perhaps one day, she is able to tell Rook more about herself and her past... If there was one.
" Nine years... That is a long time for mortals... I... cannot say how many years has passed since I... came to be. Must be many... I remember when the city has been not as big as it is now... "
But she only remember those days very vague. Though it was the time in which she was given that name by someone.
" And what... made you want to become a hunter? "
That was actually really nice to hear. Getting attacked on sight and seeing many others cowering in fear gets to you eventually. It was nice to know some found her to be a nice and friendly birb despite the armor and the claws.
"Well, thank you. I try to be nice as much as I can." Until someone decided to test her patience. "Oh, I guess it has been a while. It doesn't really feel that way but it was alright."
It was never peaceful. Still, being a hunter had become a part of her and it was impossible to imagine a quiet regular life now. It had taken a lot out of her and it had felt hopeless at times, but it had given too. Rook had to be thankful for that.
But there was the question and she couldn't help a little bit of unease, the rules always looming every time. She treated them more like a suggestion but she still felt a responsibility towards them.
"I didn't really choose this life. It's something that runs in the family, you see. My mother was a hunter before me and then I got picked. It's complicated and you really don't want to hear stuff like 'I was born to do this', but I wouldn't want to go back on it. I got used to my fire."
It was best to joke about it. Rook shifted her gaze up to the sky, one hand going to the fluffy mantel that adorned her armor.
"But you've been around way longer. I don't know what the city used to look like. I guess it used to be easier to navigate. Was it always this haunted?"
"Yes. I figured it'd give him some closure but I guess that's relative when Five is still causing trouble." Rook said, before shaking her head, "Actually, I have a feeling they think he isn't ruthless enough. It isn't surprising he turned out this way, especially the slimy part."
Five's powers reflected his family oddly well in that regard. Not a single ghost had nice words to spend about them these days even without considering their decision to leave the Order. A toxic child felt like a natural extension of their attitude towards anyone unfortunate enough to meet them.
"Oh, yeah, Rook told me about him. It's just something to hear Tails agree that he should be beaten with hammers first chance we get." Fae replied, raising her hand, "I don't exactly have a hammer or a saw to get rid of this guy's hands, but I could pin him to a wall so Willow can practice throwing all her fancy knives."
Willow gave her fairy double a look of appreciation, before raising an eyebrow at the way Ratchet had been renamed in the text. That was appropriate, she couldn't deny that.
"We may have to call him Dead Shit by the end of the day." Lucien added, before taking a deep breath. There was no point in destroying this alleyway when he could have unleashed his full rage on Ratchet later.
Assuming they could find him and Five. Hopefully, their intelligence branch could help them with that. Willow had briefly strayed from the task at hand to pay attention to Travis.
"You may save yourself some trouble if you were to leave a fresh offering by the nearest dark corner, if you're looking to join us." she advised, before considering the rather odd footage they were gathering, "To be fair, he's having pistachio. That is nefarious in its own right."
Rook decided to watch as well. Getting an idea of Five's physical condition would have helped them regardless of how absurd the whole scene looked. It looked like he wasn't fully recovered as expected, though he was still strong enough to catch Russell.
"He probably has a bunch of cars anyway." Rook pointed out, "This one isn't as pretentious at least."
There was still the problem of Ratchet. They could get around some tripwire, but he carried some actually dangerous junk and they wouldn't have much time to deal with it in the middle of a fight.
"Russell was bleeding. I think they figured out a way to slow down his rewind." Rook told Leofric, "We'll count on your spell and we should do everything possible to keep Five from luring us inside again."
Even if that meant standing in the rain and dealing with her soaked wings in the aftermath.
"Well, I guess we just have to follow the car, then."
Willow was well ahead in that regard. The footage from various nearby traffic cameras was being reviewed to track Five's movements and display them on a map for easier fruition.
While Willow worked, Erica crawled down the side of the building with the help of some shadowy spider legs.
"Hey, Leofric, that storm smells weird." the still upside-down elf said looking ahead at the spot where the clouds were concentrating above one of the tallest buildings. Lightning struck, highlighting one side for a brief, yet very dramatic moment.
"I suppose there's always another chance for Shade to stomp on him, seeing as the building wasn't enough," Bill said, "He just has to make sure it's with a shoe he doesn't care about very much."
"Hmm, so I suppose the apple doesn't fall far from the tree when they're trying to make that the case," Antonio said, frowning. It really was worrying just how easily he might have turned out like Five, "And now it's our problem to deal with."
Because of course it was. Like parents who let young children kick the back of a stranger's chair and laugh about it, this was something that fell onto everyone else's shoulders.
"I believe even the nicest people would agree once they met Ratchet," Leofric said, "And it really does say something about the man. I wouldn't mind seeing him meet some karmic retrubition himself."
"That's why Antonio making him think his dick was gone worked," Bill said, "But apparently not enough to make him stop."
Antonio also smirked a little bit at Fae's ideas.
"I'd have to make sure to get some good popcorn for that display," Antonio said. But they couldn't get ahead of themselves just yet. He knew that all too well.
"That would be ideal," Bill agreed with Lucien, "And of course Russell would try to warn us before anything else. Can't deny he's always a selfless lad, that one. And we'll find him and kick Ratchet's ass at the same time."
The second comment was aimed more at Lucien, and Bill hoped it would be reassuring.
"That sounds like a good idea," Travis agreed, "And I do a few bananas. I guess they could work as a worthy offering."
Especially if he knew just who might have been carting him through the shadows.
"I suppose there is that," Simon said, "Pistachio is one of the most bland flavours out there."
"He has regained some strength," Leofric observed, "But hopefully not as much as he had before."
He then nodded at Rook.
"I will do my best to take that off as soon as I can, and to administer remedies to alleviate the symptoms that those poisons may be causing," Leofric said.
"It looks like it took a fairly standard route," Simon confirmed, as he looked over the map display, "So catching up to them shouldn't be too difficult."
"I can use my telekinesis to at least stop some of Ratchet's projectiles or other gadgets," Antonio said, "Or maybe at least catch him and prevent him from moving to use them for a short time."
"Staying outside would also be the wiser idea," Leofric nodded, before he then looked over at Erica, "Yes, I will agree, it doesn't smell like your standard storm, and it isn't moving like a standard storm."
"So it's not a normal storm," Bill said, "What's that got to do with all of this?"
Leofric once again tilted his head briefly at the sight, as the lightning struck to highlight a particular building.
"Well, that's a bit ominous," Bill commented.
"Something tells me that we should go and investigate the scary tower," Leofric mused, his completely deadpan as he looked up at the place.

"Shade wanted to see him too, so we went." Rook replied, "I also had a chat with the older Fives while we were there. Mum's image issues look even sillier now."
It must have sucked to live with a couple of shady skeletal figures. Five simply couldn't have nice things. It wasn't surprising he was a miserable asshole bent on ruining everybody's lives.
"It wasn't a fun trip for my nose, but I think he's going to have new tricks up his sleeves too now." Erica agreed, "We'll figure it out, though. We just have to look out for new weirdos and let Rook set Ratchet on fire."
"Damn. You know someone sucks when Erica wants them to combust!" Fae said, receiving a nod of approval from Willow.
"Indeed. I believe Russell would have warned us given the chance as well." Willow said, turning the phone to look at the screen once it was whole again, "They seem to have followed the same script, Five didn't expose himself last time either. Therefore, he will likely have us come to him again as well."
They could have used some masks right now. Though Five might still choose to stay true to his snake aesthetic and prefer fighting in the open this time around.
"You may thank my nanites for the quick repairs."
It was the least she could contribute, given the circumstances. Willow was able to absorb the relevant data before the phone could start replaying the recordings, using that time to theorize possible scenarios they could be dealing with. There was a look of approval from the ladies when Russell managed to land that very critical hit on Ratchet, but it was clear the gizmo loser had prevailed in the end.
"We should have buried him in the ocean." Lucien looked ready to punch a hole through a wall, and currently had the means to do so. Though before his cuffs could grant that wish, he found Rook's hand resting on his arm, as his shoulder was too far up to reach.
"The ocean is polluted enough. Save that rage for the fight, Russell is counting on you."
Lucien seemed pacified for the moment, though it was clear he was only forcing himself to appear calm. That allowed Rook to regroup with her doubles. This wasn't the first operation that required all four of them. Everyone fell into their roles without hesitation.
"We can't say that but you can trust we'll get your brother back." Rook said, before looking at Willow, "Do your thing."
Willow folded her hands behind her back as she turned to head off. "Simon, I'm going to hack some cameras for you. Please, review the footage."
"I'll have a look around." Erica hopped on the nearest wall and started crawling up to the roof.
"While I– Don't know this place well. So I'm going to stick with the group." Fae said, taking a step closer to Antonio, "I hope we'll be able to get around with all those other hunters you've got here."
Rook stopped her with a harsh wave of her hand. "Don't even mention that. I really don't have the patience for those idiots right now. Let's get moving, who knows what they're doing to Russell. We'll figure something out regarding the masks we should have brought along while we look for him."
To make things worse, it looked like it was about to rain. There were clouds gathering in the distance, just in case the situation wasn't dire enough.
"Hey, at least Bill is ready for that storm!" Fae joked.
"That makes sense," Bill said, "I guess Shade wanted to take a good look at him so he could recognise him once Five woke up and took his leave."
He had found himself wishing Five had been in that abandoned construction building when Shade stomped it down. But now Shade had another chance to perhaps squish him like some kind of bug.
"I hope they know how much they messed up," Antonio said, "To have Five turn out like how he did."
After all, Antonio had come rather close to that himself. Perhaps not to being a hunter, but definitely some miserable old bastard.
"Oh he's a real scumbag," Bill agreed with Fae, "One of those people the world would definitely be better of without, and shouldn't have his hands and some other organs to creep on people with."
The phone screen had also come back to life, and opened up on the group chat. Russell had indeed been typing a warning. He had clearly been rushing, and so the phone had autocorrected what he had been trying to write. The message had read 'Rat Shit is back', but he hadn't had the chance to send it. Bill did laugh a little bit at that.
"Well, I have to say that's rather accurate," Leofric mused as he looked at the message, "And that does confirm that he was trying to warn us before that struggle ensued."
"Not sure we should subject Josh and his buddies to that kind of thing either," Bill said, hoping that would help Lucien calm down that little bit more, "As Rook said, best to save it for when we get to kick Five's ass and save Russell's."
"Yeah, I know you will, thank you," Travis said. There wasn't much else he could do right now, bar preparing to grab the next flight down there. He seemed to be considering it, given that he had already opened a web page to look them up.
"I got him," Simon said, "Just before this whole thing started."
He then got it set so everyone could check it out in the group chat, not wanting anyone to miss what he was seeing in case they wanted to see what was happening too. Having as many eyes on it as possible would be helpful.
"All right, that's just odd," Simon commented, "It's like Five doesn't seem to know what's going on. He's just getting an ice cream."
"Probably just having a pre torture treat," Bill said, "Don't let it fool you. He most likely sent Ratchet to go catch Russell while he chilled out."
"We won't let them stop us," Antonio said to Fae, "No one is going to stand in our way when it comes to Five."
The footage then showed Russell staggering out of the alley as Simon switched to another camera. There was some horrible tacky cuff fastened around his wrist. From the way blood ran down from under it, over his hand, and to the ground, it looked like there were spikes or something similar digging deep into his skin. Russell looked awful, and he collapsed just as Five caught him.
"A car!" Travis called out, as Simon changed to another camera feed that Willow had found, "Five got himself a new car from the looks of it."
"That's helpful to know," Simon agreed.
"I suppose I can at least use some kind of magic to protect us for a short time," Leofric suggested, "It wouldn't be as effective as masks, and wouldn't last as long, but it would provide some resistance."
Leofric looked up, tilting his head to the side a little bit when he saw the storm clouds. Something about them didn't feel entirely right.
"I definitely am," Bill said, "But a bit of rain isn't going to kill me, so if anyone else wants this, go for it."
The clouds were helping to block out the sun for now. If the storm got any worse, he wouldn't need the umbrella at all.
"There wasn't anything like that predicted today, was there?" Antonio then asked, "A storm, I mean."
Look at this way, Five. You at least know some of Russell's weak points, and you can always fall back on having the option of making him wish he could die.
Five doesn't seem too amused by the concept as he enjoys a brisk iced tea.
"Well, I suppose it's possible now. Although I'd rather have that damn cat man, or that plague doctor wannabe wish for that. No, if I really wanted to torture Russell, I'd make him watch and beg to let him take their place."
Those self sacrificing tendencies were stronger than anything he could come up with.
"But I have no need for that. I don't enjoy arguing about good and evil while I'm torturing my enemies."
sorry it's all bees now. Yeah. Yeah it's just bees. Yeah everything. All of it. It's all just bees. Yeah I did that. Nothing you can do sorry. But hey. At least it's bees.

🐕- Dog breed for Erica
I really don't know much about dogs, but a Swedish Lapphund would be a fitting choice for Erica. They're a swedish breed apparently used for herding and hunting, which are more of less Erica's main activities. They also have a long black fur that fits a shadow user.
🌳- Tree for Willow
Let's leave Willow alone to contemplate the question for a moment to share a bit of backstory. Indeed, her name comes from the weeping willow. She liked the one that sat in the garden inside the facility and chose that for her name when the time came. It's a tree that not many appreciate because of the drooping leaves and the tree's habit of growing at the weirdest angles.
But even as they look desperate and about to weep, they never break. The willow is a symbol of vitality, resilience and rebirth, all qualities that fit Willow. But if we were to consider something else, the magnolia is another fitting tree. It’s a symbol of dignity, perseverance and superior beauty, and its flowers are pink.
🍙- Snack for Rook
Rook isn't that pretentious at her core, so I guess something like a piadina would fit. It's simple, allows for a variety of toppings, and it's quick to make. It's really just some flour, water and a bit of olive oil.
You wouldn't make much of it but it fits all diets and Rook is like that. She looks grumpy and exhausted but she's friends with the strangest people.
⚡️- Weather for Fae
Fae is a summer evening. The kind that's warm but not too much, right after it has rained. It's dark but it doesn't feel like it, the crickets are making a scene and it's you and your friends sitting on the swings at the little forgotten park of your town, laughing and talking about everything.
🍰- Dessert for Lucien
Lucien is a sponge cake with chocolate and Chantilly frosting. It's something I personally wouldn't go out of my way to have but it's how he is; fancy and intricate, and he knows how to use that to his advantage.
📖- Book/novel/story for Five
Five probably sees himself as a noir protagonist. The lonely detective trudging through the street at night, only a shitty cigarette in his hand to keep him company and a terrible secret that will only be revealed at the end (and will surprise no one).
He luckily doesn't live on the edge of alcoholism at all times, but he is that kind of loser who comes home bleeding because his hubris got him shot after losing his mind after some femme fatale. It's surprisingly fitting, considering his love life is just as detrimental to his health as hunting can be.
🎵- Song for Josh
I couldn't decide on anything pirate related, so I guess this one will do. Josh is actually content with not seeing too much action and would rather explore the deep depths in his free time. You can picture him swimming about to this tune after collecting a 3DS covered in barnacles he will try to fix just to brag about it.
🎀- Clothing for Mark
This is a harsh reminder that I should draw Mark already. He likes to dress comfortably and is a real connoisseur of flannel. Short sleeves, of course, paired with a long sleeved tee underneath during the chill season unless the temperature calls for a hoodie.
The shirts come in a variety of patterns and there's at least one with shredded shoulders for whenever Mark feels like attending a concert or a party.
💎- Gemstone for Miles
Miles' extremely sober mage outfit includes a pendant shaped, allegedly, like a dragon head and decorated with a ruby. It's a symbol of passion and vitality, which certainly fit, and it's red.
Yes, he has joked about feeling naked if the pendant fell off in the process of removing his shirt.
"We definitely knocked him down a notch. We paid him a visit a few months ago and I can tell you one solstice wouldn't have been enough to recover from all of that."
There was only so much Five's body could take, even with the blessing of his patron. With some luck, that meant beating him a second time was going to be easier. The critical question now was how many of little sidekicks he had gathered this time. Frosty was the only one she could really keep an eye on. There was no telling whether the others were ready to try their luck again.
"And you can't expect most people to come take a look whenever someone's getting jumped in an alley." Rook grumbled, "Lucien, stop poking around. You can't speak to the mold."
"I'm checking for traps. If Five is behind this, the pervert will be close by."
"Ah right, that must have been what set you off." Rook said, giving a shrug, "Bad news, guys. Ratchet is probably around too. Lucien's ears were whistling and it wasn't my fault."
"Oh, that sucks." Erica said as soon as she emerged from the shadows, "Hello! I brought Fae!"
"Hello, my darlings. I figured the group could use an extra old man." Fae said with a small smile, "And maybe some moral support."
"Here, Willow." Erica handed her double her gloves, "I figured you'd need them out here."
"Thank you kindly." Willow quickly donned her gloves, before reaching to take the phone, "Allow me to fix this. Simon, you may have a look as well as soon as I'm done."
The nanites worked swiftly, repairing the shattered screen and restoring the damaged connections.
Erica's ears flickered at the microscopic work. "I guess the whirring is a good sign."
Willow nodded. "The microphone might have recorded something meaningful as well. I will point you to the encrypted files."
"And that, guys, is how Willow always picks the best presents." Rook joked.
"At least I am not selling the information to advertisers."
"I will admit, I didn't bother," Bill said, "I wouldn't have been able to resist the urge to punch him, and even though he deserves it, it would have been a low blow even for me."
"I only visited him the once as well," Antonio said.
"It is true that he most likely hasn't recovered fully," Leofric agreed, "But there is the possibility that he has found more possible lackeys, or has created some new form of concoction, or perhaps learned new tactics that may surprise us."
"No, of course not," Antonio said, "I can imagine he would have tried to call or message one of us for help, but didn't get the chance."
Leofric took a brief moment to sniff at the phone when it floated close enough.
"Good thinking," Bill said to Lucien, "We don't know what they might have left behind."
"Five hasn't touched it," Leofric confirmed, when he had gotten a good whiff of its scent, "It's safe for us to handle directly at the moment."
"Of course he would be," Antonio said, like he had tasted something foul. He hated that man, possibly more than Five, and that was certainly saying something, "Maybe I'll make him think I've taken his hands this time."
"Sounds like fun," Bill said, before he smiled at Fae, "Always good to see a fellow old man, especially for moral support."
Bill then let out a low whistle as the phone seemed to repair itself right in front of his eyes at Willow's efforts.
"That is amazing," Travis said
"No problem, I got this," Simon said. It wasn't long before he navigated enough to where he found it, "All right, let's see if we can get a clue here."
"Heh, there is that," Bill said, "And that explains why I seem to conveniently find awesome things for you all when I need to."
The conversation started from where Russell had just run into the alleyway. Ratchet's voice as he taunted Russell and the jingling of his various accessories gave him away. It appeared that despite trying to hide at first, Russell had eventually decided to try and fight. There was a hiss of pain from Russell, but then it sounded like he had managed to deal a devastating blow to Ratchet in turn
"Ha! That's my bro!" Travis said.
The running started up again, but it was unsteady, and the wall kept being rubbed up against, like Russell was falling against it. Then there was that quiet plea that Russell struggled to get out of his mouth, and that was the last words he said in that conversation.
"No..." Simon only said, "He really didn't learn to leave us alone, did he? And now they've managed to snatch Russell."
"We'll get him back," Leofric said, "I won't tell you not worry, because that's inevitable, but I promise that he will find him and save him."
"Right. I should complain to the city hall about the lack of parking space again."
It was clearly getting in the way of her customers, much to the ghosts' amusement. They had no such issues. Their ship could sit nicely on top of the surrounding buildings if necessary where it wouldn't bother Rook.
"I'd be happy to hang out more often. It'd just be nice if you could call ahead so I can clear my schedule first."
They had the means for that now. The last panel was finally secured, leaving Rook to check whether there were any parts mysteriously left over from the reassembly process.
"And that's about it. Time to make another bit of science history I'll never be able to publish anything about."
The ghosts could enjoy their incorporeal and weightless nature. Shade never wanted to go back to anything remotely resembling his previous formless state. The inconveniences that came along with taking up space were well worth it.
"I think I can manage calling you so that you can be suitably prepared." It wasn't like he'd ever needed to worry about whether she was home due to their connection, but he could do it for her sake.
"But you must admit, surprise visits can be fun at times~" Or maybe it was just him that thought that.
Shade held up his reassembled radio with satisfaction. It was always nice to have things go according to plan.
"An unsung hero, you are."
