Lost in Consumption | Chris Jordon

Photographer and artist Chris Jordon traveled to Midway Atoll, a cluster of islands remote from any continent, to discover the affects of over-consumption from the mainland. What he discovered and captured in this project is heart-breaking: thousands of dead albatrosses with bellies with our trash.. Through macabre photos, Jordon accounts these fair animals and reflects on humankind’s wasteful nature. 

Like the albatross, we first-world humans find ourselves lacking the ability to discern anymore what is nourishing from what is toxic to our lives and our spirits. Choked to death on our waste, the mythical albatross calls upon us to recognize that our greatest challenge lies not out there, but in here.

Bird is the Word.... For Going Plastic Free!

This is a nice video of a captive, previously injured albatross from the Monterey Bay Aquarium (an excellent place to visit if you ever find yourself in Monterey). It is supposed to be showing you how special these birds are to discourage plastic use since thousands of chicks die each year when their parents mistakenly feed them plastic. The anti-plastic message is a bit weak, but it is still a cool up close and personal video of an albatross that won't make you sad.

If you want to know how plastics are killing the world's seabirds and are prepared to be saddened, I recommend Chris Jordan's Midway work.
