This is the first book in the series, but the fourth one I've read. At the beginning there's a tiny bit of a set-up for the series, but each instalment works fine on its own.
This one is particularly silly, which kids will love - and the illustrations will help children understand the words they are reading. Each page, things get a little bit worse - until it's a disaster!
I love the little touches in the illustrations in this series. The spider hanging off the back of Mary's hat, for example.
Sally Rippin's series have an addictive quality to them, and I can see children wanting to read every one of these books.

I loved that you don't notice at first how Pete is hanging back from everyone else, scared to participate in the sport day because he's clumsy.
Kids will love the page where he is all tangled up!
These are great early readers for kids. The stories are entertaining enough that children won't even realise they're learning as they go. The key word on every page is highlighted to help young readers understand the rest of the sentence. It's a really clever setup.
The ending is great fun, and I really liked the illustrations in this one!

This entertaining early reader series from the author of the Billie B Brown books has a cast of funny, not-scary monster characters and easy language for beginning readers to pick up on their own.
I love the little details in the illustrations - the coffin-shaped lunchbox with stickers on it, example. The pictures are colourful and fun to look at again and again, with some funny moments.
As with the first book in the series I read, there are reading activities and an art project included at the end that will keep kids entertained for some time.
This would be a good series to invest in for children just learning to read on their own.
