Fantastic Mr Fox by Chris Marshall Via Flickr: Fantastic Mr. Fox was a novel by Roald Dahl and in 2009 made into a an animated film. This story is about a fox who steals food each night from three mean and wealthy farmers and gets away with it. A little different from my usual photography but a fun day out at DZP. This is my first September competition entry.

This is the start of this year’s Advent Stories! Chris Marshall will be the star of our first eight story days. I hope you will enjoy the story!

“Oh wow!” The words are out of your mouth before you can stop them.

Stepping into the hotel lobby is like stepping into a different world. You are swallowed up in the atmosphere created by glowing golden decorations, white marble and heavy (and undoubtedly very expensive) dark wood.

You immediately feel out of place and tighten the grip on your bag. You are here for a reason even you still cannot believe that you have been given this chance.

You clear your throat and look over to your colleague standing next to you. She is trying to appear totally nonchalant as if this place is something she’s seeing every day.

“Right. Let’s find out where we will meet him then.” You clear your throat and push your shoulders back.

 Somehow the people at the reception lmanage to look quite intimidating.

“We have an appointment with Mr Marshall.” You manage to get out even if your mouth has gone dry. “Senator Marshall, sorry.” You smile and ignore the slight eye roll you get from the receptionist.  She picks up a phone and checks your reporter’s ID before telling you where you would find “The Senator”.

You reply with a sweet smile and take a deep breath. Your colleague is whistling quietly as some really nice designer clothes walk by, which you have only admired from the wrong side of the store windows so far.

“I wonder how long she’ll manage to keep that clean.” Your colleague mutters as a beautiful woman walks past you wearing an all white outfit, covered by an equally all white Dolce and Gabana coat. You bite your lip so you won’t laugh out loud suddenly. “Maybe she thinks that she can wear white as snow’s white too…”

“She’ll be in for a surprise then.” Your colleague hoists her camera bag over her shoulder after throwing a look outside the large window showing the grey mess that used to be freshly fallen snow just a few hours before.

“Right…Let’s do this…” You say to yourself and step into the lift. “You’ll do great.” You mutter quietly and silently thank whatever caused your editor to give you this interview with the senator instead of doing it himself.

You sort through the questions in your mind and hope they will be smart, interesting and challenging so that this will only be the first of many interviews you’d do in hotel rooms just like the one you are standing in front of much too soon.

You knock on the door and feel your knees trembling slightly. Maybe you should have done more research? Thought of different questions? Put on a different outfit?

As soon as the door gets opened you just know that it wouldn’t have been of any help – nothing would have been able to prepare you for the sight of Senator Marshall. Standing in front of you. In person.

His light blue eyes shining, a bright smile on his lips as if he just heard a joke...
