France kept their Six Nations titles hopes alive with a last gasp 19-17 win away to Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday. The Scots were on the brink of winning their first Test in eight matches against France when New Zealand referee Chris Pollock awarded a debatable penalty in front of the posts as the ball came out from a ruck. Replacement Jean-Marc Doussain made sure of the kick and there was barely any time left for Scotland to mount a comeback. Victory -- France's first away from home since winning at Murrayfield two years ago -- left Philippe Saint-Andre's side in with a shout of a winner-takes-all clash with title rivals Ireland in Paris next week. It's in your hands now boys!
The Chiefs vs the Crusaders was one of the most anticipated match-ups of the new Super 15 season even without Dan Carter on the pitch. Chris Pollock of NZ is the man in the middle and early on decides he isn’t pleased with the team’s performance at the breakdown. This is a great directive from the referee and it couldn’t have come at a better time (even the commentators agree):
The 20 minute mark is often used for water breaks when conditions necessitate and it’s also a great opportunity to have a word with your captains. He starts this captain chat by stating a fact that too many penalties are occurring at the breakdown. Then puts the responsibility of correcting the behavior on the captains. He goes as far as saying “you guys make the choice, it’s in your hands now.” He also reminds Aaron Cruden, the Chiefs captain, to have the word with his boys after noticing Cruden had neglected to relay the message. It’s textbook until he goes slightly too far by threatening yellow cards.
Most teachers and referee coaches will tell you it’s a poor practice to threaten cards as a deterrent because it forces yourself into a corner. If you threaten cards and don’t show one at the next penalty, it tells the players they don’t have to take your threats seriously. It almost reinforces the negative behavior and takes away your authority. The players know you can issue cards for repeat infringement, there’s no need for threats.
