I will be one of the firsts to say that I side eye the heck out of Lin Manuel Miranda especially after Hamilton. I can tell you the pros and cons of that piece of art while still appreciating it. However, I need y’all to listen to Warriors by him and Eisa Davis who is the iconic Angela Davis’ niece and is responsible for other works of art like Passing Strange. These two put together an amazing concept album that tells the story of the Warriors from the 1979 movie. Though this time the Warriors are women, Black and Brown women to be more specific, and they are absolutely incredible. Their story is told to the sounds of hip hop, R&B, salsa, ska, etc. Then to represent the boroughs of New York you got Nas, Busta Rhymes, Ghostface Killa and RZA from Wu-Tang Clan, Chris Rivers, and Cam’ron. Shenseea is the DJ too. Even Lauryn Hill is on this album playing Cyrus. Coleman Domingo is rapping his behind off too. Like oh my god. I need them to bring this to the stage cuz this honestly something I could see myself doing lol. I also need white theater people to calm it down too. Lin has always utilized hip hop and been a hip hop head. Y’all are too used to hearing and seeing New York from the POV of other white people and y’all better come correct cuz I’m already seeing dumb takes. Anyways, it really is a great story that’s told in 26 tracks by very talented people. Y’all would love it.
