Heeeey, look at the time! ⏰
It’s time for another episode of “Rambling about Random Things with Chris!” It’s about another fangame series and just like Project Readjusted, it changed me. However, it’s NOT a personal hell (thank god). It’s a little something called… Five Nights at Sonic’s.
Yea, that one “low-effort” fangame with Mario and Sonic characters taking the place of the FNaF animatronics in a pizzeria setting coming to get ya. However, if I were to tell you that this fangame series was actually part of my top 10 favorite FNaF fangame series, you’ll might say that I’m an idiot. And you’ll be right! :D
Back then in like 2015-16, I didn’t think of FNaS and just passed it off as one of those low-effort fangames on Gamejolt by a kid who didn’t know how to code. I had that mindset for at least a while until I came across TheGameSalmon playing the 5 FNaS games (most particularly 3, 4, and 5) in 2017-18. And in that moment, I sorta grew interested in the series. I can’t exactly pinpoint the day or year I actually started playing a FNaS game, but the one that I started with was Five Nights at Sonic’s 3. And it wasn’t bad, although I didn’t finish it due to laziness lol
Another moment of me getting interested in the series was the time I downloaded the entire Five Nights at Sonic’s Collection off of Gamejolt in 2018 before it was taken down for some reason. Thankfully, I still have it in my laptop lol, so I’m able to play any of the 5 FNaS games anytime.
And yet another moment was in like, 2019 I believe, when I was in a server with a couple of other people discussing FNaS and its characters. And one of them brought the fact that the fangame series was originally supposed to get a 6th entry that was like Pizzeria Simulator. And holy shit, was it such a shame that it was canned. It looked so good with the improved art (despite it by made by a different artist) for the characters and rooms. And whoa and behold, this wouldn’t be the last time that FNaS would appear in my mind lol
It is now 2020, my last year of high school and you what released in that year?
Of course lol. FNaS’s Ultimate Custom Night. And I did play it on the day it released and might I say, it is INFINITELY better than the original UCN. The art is fantastic, the gameplay is pretty fun the more I play the game, and the amount of content it has was phenomenal. The survival mode, the achievements, and the fact that I have a reason to beat the all max mode to fully complete the game is really telling.
And because of this game’s influence on me, it got me to draw almost all of the FNaS characters during the next few school days. And holy shit, I improved on drawing the Mario and Sonic characters ever since the last time I drew them.
Months pass and then COVID has hit the world, causing people to stay inside due to their realization that no one’s learnt how to wash their hands. And this gave me the freedom to do whatever I want since I’ve graduated, including: drawing and modeling lol. And what did I model in the year? Of course again-
Now at first, I thought these models of the FNaS characters looked decent. But as time went on, I now realized just how absolutely awful they look. And keep in mind, this was in like 2020, where my modeling skills was at below average and I hadn’t modeled the Sonic and Mario characters before so I working with what I got. I still question to this day why’d I thought giving Mario and Yoshi balls for hands was a good idea, and just making Sonic’s eye a separate mesh 💀💀💀
So like, by this time, I had modeled almost every FNaS characters during and complete almost every challenge in Maniac Mania, leaving just the last max mode challenge left. Now I don’t know if I said this before, but I absolutely despise doing all max challenges in FNaF games, especially in fangames. Like what even is the point in beating the most impossible challenge in a fangame? Is it just for bragging rights? I would just complete the “main story” in a fangame + the occasional Night 6 and leave it at that. I wouldn’t want to waste an indescribable amount of hours on just an impossible mode on a custom night with no point in continuing the game. The ONLY time I’ve ever beat an all max challenge was the 7/20 mode challenge in Five Nights at Candy’s Remastered, but that was mainly due to forced obligation.
Maniac Mania however was a different story, of course this was the usual custom night game just like UCN. HOWEVER, what this fangame had that UCN doesn’t is a reason for me to beat the all max challenge. MM has achievements and the lil’ completionist inside me wanted to beat it to collect all of them + get the other content the game has. Plus the fact it has a boss fight so it’s enough for me to consider it.
I’ve attempted so many times to beat the challenge, each of them ALMOST being a perfect run for me when I reach 7AM (the hour you complete the night is 8AM) And the only thing that I needed for me to fully complete the Maniac Mania challenge was Origin Sonic. You see, one of the four Sonics (Clone, Withered, Salvage, and Origin) would be the one to kill you during a power outage. It all depends on which one of the four was closest to you in the office. And Origin Sonic, by far has the longest powerout sequence out of the four. So, during each of the power outages in my runs, I was expecting Origin to be the one for the sequence when hit the halfway point of 7AM. And on the 24th of September… it finally happened.
I completed the Maniac Mania challenge. I was shouting and pumped my fists in the air, I actually did it. My heart was pounding rapidly as I thought I wouldn’t make it, but I did and it was so satisfying. My lil’ bro had came into my room to calm me down, it was an exhausting feeling.
Anyways after that phenomenal experience, I went and collected the rest of the achievements via the game’s survival mode and completed the boss fight. By this time, I finally completed Maniac Mania. And I really enjoyed my time playing the game.
Sooner or later, I learnt that Maniac Mania’s developer “SmilerFurcifer” revealed that the game was getting a Sonic Mania PLUS-like update with THIS amount of skins, and even a revival of FNaS’s Pizza Sim as a separate mode. Not only that, but updated versions of the first 5 games with an Maniac Mania-styled artstyle now called “The Next Generation” were planned.
Notice the past tense “was” and “were” because, yeah both were cancelled in like 2021. And I was pretty distraught by this, considering the fact that I was getting real sick of fangames getting cancelled left and right in that year. And I thought that was the last time Five Nights at Sonic’s will ever get anything official coming out. The original creator TheCyVap had left the series and gave it to Smiler, and they weren’t doing anything with it anymore. So like, it was the end.
Lmao the past tenses again. Five Nights at Sonic’s has returned again with Maniac Mania getting a full on recoded version named Maniac Mania: Infinite and the first 5 games getting the Super Mario All Stars treatment. I was pretty excited about it, and hoped and prayed that nothing can go wrong with this an-
This fangame series really can’t catch a break. It was dropped into the ground, thrown to the curb, stomped on til it was barely moving, and lit on fire with a match so it was nothing but ash. So basically, more controversy and drama happened surrounding Smiler in like 2023 and holy shit, was it distressing. Not to mention other people that helped with the games get into their own controversies too. It didn’t help Maniac Mania Infinite was cancelled BEFORE all of this happened. And I was on the sidelines watching everything unfold, until I just couldn’t take it anymore and completely distanced myself from anything FNaS related.
This was what I meant when I said a few months ago about isolating myself from everything bad happening. It’s not good for my mental state, and the fact that I have never mentioned anything about Five Nights at Sonic’s until now is pretty telling. What makes this worse is the fact that, I had originally planned on remodeling my old FNaS models with the intention of actually modeling the Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog characters.
And because of what happened, I just stopped the process because FNaS is actually dead at this point. And what do you know? This’ll foreshadow my mental state going down in the future due to fangames messing with my head.
So what makes Five Nights at Sonic’s part of my top 10 favorite FNaF fangames? Well, the majority of the reason was of my experience with Maniac Mania being a blast. And the other reason is because it’s FNaF but with Mario and Sonic lol. The third reason… I actually don’t know. Despite it not being nostalgic to me like The Return to Freddy’s, despite it just being the original FNaF games coated with the Sega + Nintendo paint, and DESPITE it not being what I envision my own hell to be like Project Readjusted… I don’t know why.
It could be how the lore was structured (in a funni way), how the game looks and feels, or just how much it meant to me back in 2020… does that sound right? It is strange to see how Five Nights at Sonic’s went from a fangame I’ve pay no attention for, to becoming one of my favorite FNaF fangame series in my opinion. I just didn’t know what I had until it’s gone.
So like, what’s the point of this ramble?
Five Nights at Sonic’s, very good series. Will miss it dearly.
SmilerFurcifer, I hate you so much.
The series not continuing anymore, will continue to be depressed about that.
Fangame models, never ever doing it again.
ADDED NOTE: Also, the theme for Maniac Mania’s Aggressive mode, “Maniac Melee” is such a bop to listen to.
i’m gonna make a bold claim. i don’t think hua cheng should have reverted into a child for that one arc where he was conserving his spiritual energy. i think he should have turned into a worm or something instead. and xie lian should have made him a little enclosure and filled it with leaves and carried little worm hc with him through mount tonglu
OPEN STARTER
You saw a boy near camp's border, talking to a fairly beautiful older woman. You watch them exchange words before the woman returns to the dark blue car just outside camp, driving away.
The boy is one that's not very familiar to you yet. His hair dangles just above his shoulders, considered long for male standards, and the ends were highlighted with blonde. He stares at the couple of boxes at his feet, his hands planted on his waist, and then he attempts to pick one up. But his legs wobble, and he loses his balance, and the box topples over, spilling out some of his stuff. "Putang-"
