And so the concept of bashing comic book movie sequels continues. While Chris Tilly doesn’t completely dislike Thor: The Dark World, he reveals a little too much of the plot, which involves the Asgardians saving the Nine Realms from a bunch of really mean elves.  

It’s unclear just how much Tilly dislikes or likes the action-packed sequel, as he goes from praising gritty battle sequences to complaining about the lack of Loki. And acknowledging Darcy’s (Kat Dennings) one-liners to getting annoyed about Jane (Natalie Portman) and Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) relationship. And then celebrating the movie’s funny moments to calling it bland overall.  

As “schizophrenic” as Tilly claims the movie is at times, one could make the same argument about the critic’s review: he likes it! No he doesn’t. He does like it! Well, maybe not.

While Tilly does wrap up his thoughts in a concluding paragraph (he basically doesn’t like it), it’s still hard to follow what his exact feelings on the action flick are. However, disdain does seem to pervade the review, as do key plot points. Because come on, who wants to learn the backstory of those jerky elves and assorted legendary Asgardian weapons until you’re actually in the theater soaking up shirtless Thor and company?

Chris Tilly’s “DOES the ENDER JUSTIFY the MEANS?” Is Unjustifiably Long

There’s no rule as to how long a movie review should be, but there are certainly limitations to readers’ patience. If a reviewer is going to demand a reader’s attention for the span of over 1,200 words, those words had better be put to good use.

Chris Tilly never justifies his word count in “DOES THE ENDER JUSTIFY THE MEANS,” a review that is long on words but short on ideas. Much of the review is given over to a detailed explanation of the movie’s plot. Cut that part out, and the review would at least be leaner, if not meaner.

What makes matters worse is how squeezed together the text of the review is. It occupies a thin strip in the middle of the web page, and with as long as the review is the reader ends up scrolling for what seems like an eternity before reaching the end.

And readers will be anxious to reach the end, as there is little wit or insight to be found in JUSTIFY THE MEANS. It’s as dry as the Arizona desert, only without the heat.

Tilly might have done better under more constraints, where he would have been forced to be concise. Instead, so much of his writing seems to merely be padding. It makes for a tedious slog, where the end means sweet relief.

BENEDICT CUMBERBATH SHINES IN DRAMA ABOUT THE RISE OF WIKILEAKS.... The film nevertheless remains an interesting account of era-defining events, anchored by a grandstanding central performance from Benedict Cumberbatch as Assange.... ...features a hugely impressive performance from Cumberbatch as Assange. The British actor has become the go-to guy for arrogant intellectuals in the likes of Starter For Ten, Star Trek Into Darkness and TV’s Sherlock, and here his aloof charm is put to great use as the enigmatic Australian. He certainly looks the part, transforming himself physically and perfectly mimicking Assange’s Aussie drawl. But it’s far more than simple impersonation, with Cumberbatch endeavouring to delve beneath the surface to get to the beating heart of this complex man.

Chris Tilly’s “Balls to the Wall” Kicks Its Own Ass

Chris Tilly’s “Balls to the Wall”  is refreshing, in that it’s the first review where the word “balls” are mentioned. Which is more amusing than the rest of the rather hum-drum review Tilly submitted.

Another introduction into the “Sigh, Kick-Ass 1 was great, wasn’t it?” canon, Tilly’s mechanical review rolls out with all the gusto of a late English finale.  

Here comes the plot round up! Look here! There’s a character analysis! An argument about sequels needing to be bigger and better than the original? No, seriously! It’s all there!

Oddly, there’s a gentle affection in Tilly’s review. The review goes from humdrum to engaging because Tilly is picking up steam as he comes to the conclusion that the movie is entertainment.

The dismissal of the high school drama that acts as a counterpoint to the film is poorly executed, however, since it’s a weak comparison at best. But he rebounds by discussing the actual fight sequences. He handles these like a seasoned pro, able to keep his writing focused on what makes the movie tick.

While his clear understanding of the purpose of the film is refreshing, it is unfortunately not enough to carry the otherwise bland and lifeless review to any impressive heights.
