This was the second version of my journey into creating a new Firestorm. Remember they said “Go Crazy. “. When I brought this one to the editor at the time, Peter Tomasi, I remember how he just stared at it and said,” what in Sam Hill am I looking at here?” And his eyes just trailed into the cosmos. Lol A friend of mine said Firestorm looks more like FIREGOD than anything else... and they thought that the presence of a black halo made him too ominous and religious. Which is what I was going for. The cross between spiritual and science. Because I’m a rebel like that. I never saw Firestorm as a Nuclear Man. I always saw him as a Quantum Man. And that’s what drove my concept. Still way too much for DC to deal with in the prepping stage. By the way, all of these version were inspired by one boot from Jim Lee’s version of Firestorm that he put together. I’m glad to have been asked to do another engagement of Black History Month with DC. When they shook the glass bowl and drew out the ticket of which character I would draw in a cover, I didn’t expect Bat Characters…. Much less the freaking Bat Family! Back in the 90’s when I was in the middle of my tenure with Milestone Media, my second title for them was Heroes.... wayyy before the tv series on NBC... it was literally the Justice League of Milestone. And I only get bike JL because DC was their publisher. Lol. This was the first cover. I really got to flex on this book and they gave me a great amount of time to get things done.
