Second dinner at Bavette in Chicago. Dinner is delicious, no one bats an eye when I order a side of mayonnaise with my pomme frites. Bavette does not have bavettes, but is a quaint place nonetheless--modern industrial brick and robust wooden structures, vintage 1930's beautifully gaudy chandeliers that hang from the ceiling, and a touch of French bistro style at the bar. Servers are always surprised when I pay for dinner. Time ticks like an endless cycle to infinity. We mark the days in unmistakable motivation, looking forward to a brighter, better future. Only sometimes do we reflect and wonder where time has gone. Today was the I was divorced several years ago. I'm wondering now if I had stayed, how things would have been different. But I had wanted my wings, I wanted to be light as a feather. I never really liked belonging to anyone. And although, he held me back, we were most certainly best friends. "This is what you wanted." He looked sideways at me in the car before we said our last goodbyes. My eyes flickered over his face for the final time, his German jawline and his piercing bright blue eyes underneath strong dark eyebrows. "Yes, this is what I wanted." I stated simply. We had spent our last couple of days together, going to the movies, dining out, and laughing as we most often did--knowing that we were about to finalize our divorce. I got out of his GMC Acadia and walked shakily back to my own car. The next few years were a whirlwind of tribulation. Going through a layoff to one of the most important corporate office jobs I had ever had and a divorce within the same year. Restructuring my life to better suit the needs of my daughter and I. Being so poor, I could barely scrape twenty dollars together to buy her Christmas presents, so I had to rewrap some of her old toys so she could enjoy the sound of tearing. It moved me beyond pain. But, she didn't mind. We were happy together. "This is what you wanted." His last words repeated in my head over the next few years like a broken record. "This is what you wanted," I reminded myself and only worked harder. You should never artificially place your soul and complete happiness into someone else. Motherhood is the exception. People, though not perfect, are often vessels to travel with for a limited amount of time.
