The “Christ of the Abyss” is a submerged bronze statue of Jesus Christ. It was sculpted by Guido Galletti, based on an idea of Italian diving instructor Duilio Marcante. The original bronze statue was placed in the Mediterranean Sea on 22 August 1954, at approximately 17 metres depth and stands 2.5 metres tall.

“When you want to succeed more than you want to breathe, that’s when you’ll be successful.” . I first heard this quote in 2012 when @vancitytransplant sent me an inspirational YouTube video.  . Words I’ve always since tried to live by, but if I’m honest, I never was sure how badly I really wanted it. . A few weeks ago, I made myself realise the lengths I would go to achieve my goals, and now I feel like there’s literally nothing that will stop me. . No, I didn’t reach it first time. I fervently dived down numerous times, stopping at various depths, gagging for breath, never knowing whether I had pushed it too far and if I had enough air to make it safely back up. But, I didn’t give up. . On the successful final attempt, I formulated a proper strategy. I realised that the resources (air in this instance) I had at my disposal were limited and instead of wishing I had more, I adapted to the situation and made myself more efficient. I relaxed, slowed my breath, settled my heart rate, and calmly told myself that I wasn’t leaving that bay until I reached my goal. . What a fun time we had to day snorkeling at the Christ of the Abyss in Key Largo Florida Keys!

The #christoftheabyss statue in #Italy can be found near #SanFruttuoso on the Italian Riviera. The specific spot commemorates the first Italian to use scuba gear, who sadly died here in 1947. The statue depicts #christ offering a benediction of peace. Visiting the statue salutes to those ocean explorers before us and welcomes those who feel peace in the calm atmosphere of the underwater world.
