One thing I like about DWJ's books is how perfectly she captures the point of view of children.
Like she does an excellent job of showing how they think and how, especially, kids are not stupid. A lot of people think kids start out stupid and get smarter as they grow older, but kids already start out pretty smart. They notice, they think; they're just missing the life experience and information to apply it correctly.
The scene I always come back to is the part in Lives of Christopher Chant when Christopher's mother tells him she wants him to be part of Society when he grows up. By that she means "rich influential people," but he doesn't know that. She doesn't tell him that. Nobody tells him that. The only society he's ever heard of is the church society, so he thinks his mother wants him to become a missionary.
And, like, he's thinking! He's reasoning! He's taking the information he knows and coming to a logical conclusion! It's not his fault he's missing a whole lot of relevant information!
Commission for Asriel on Ko-fi! Thank you so much for commissioning me! 🩷
the chants!
If you feel like your gender is Howl Jenkins Pendragon and you also feel like you're getting too old for that shtick, GOOD NEWS
Christopher "Chrestomanci" Chant exists and is the exact same gender but ten years older
he's most known for wearing Absolutely Magnificent dressing gowns at all hours of the day, including a sky-blue one with Chinese dragons all over it
I recently finished re-reading "Castle" trilogy by D. W. Jones and please, tell me that I'm not the only one, who thinks that the world, where all plot happens, one of the worlds under Chrestomanci's control (I'm sorry, if I called it incorrect, but English isn't my first language and I don't read this book on it) . Like, it's one of my favorite headcanons, that ever came to my mind. And I guess it probably can explain how Howl and Sullivan came to Ingary from Wales. Or i just need Christopher Chant's and Howl's interactions, who knows?)
Yet another thing I realized about a book I read as a kid but didn't get at the time:
The villainous plot in Conrad's Fate was basically stock market manipulation. By making small alterations to reality, the stock market would change in turn, so you could jump from a timeline where you made a loss to one where you made a huge profit.
I believe this was explained in the story, but I was mostly there for the magic. Conrad and Christopher didn't understand what was going on, either; Conrad's Uncle condescendingly says he knows nothing of high finance early on.
Parallel Lines
For @flashfictionfridayofficial’s prompt Parallel Lines. This is probably more literal than it was intended!
Christopher stood before the parallel lines dividing Stallery from the other worlds. Even now I felt an odd unease standing in front of them, as if I could somehow violate the rules more than I already had. “Well, Grant, it appears that we’re back.”
“I’m glad for it,” I said, shuddering all over. “At least it wasn’t that awful tower again.”
“True,” he said. “But we’re no closer to finding Millie.”
“And my shirt got singed,” I added. “How are we going to explain that to Miss Semple?”
“It’s only a little charred,” Christopher said. Sometimes, I wonder how no one ever broke that boy’s nose. “Besides, I expect she’s used to it by now.”
“Still,” I said glumly, “there goes another week’s wages.”
“You’ll live,” he said, dismissing me with a wave.
I was sure I would. It wasn’t dying that scared me. But I wasn’t eager to find out how.
