The irrepressible Jenny Bannister, pinup girl for my feature in Lindy Percival’s Spectrum arts/culture mag on You Can’t Do That, an exhibition of fashion mavericks, part of VAMFF arts programme at Melbourne Museum. It’s a cracking, classic image by the uniquely talented Angela Wylie and the day it was shot is still sparkly fresh in my memory. It was a chilly morning out back of Jenny and Mongoose’s elegant jungly Victorian in St Kilda, back in the day when phogs and journos actually worked together. We’d barely arrived and before you could say, “you bloody legend Jen!”, our subject was frocked up in a plastic spattered ballerina and bobbing about, teeth shattering, in her pool. Her gorgeous dog was freaking out, ready to rescue, Angie was balancing an armload of camera stuff up a random ladder and me, I was hanging on to it’s A-frame, laughing like an idiot, amazed at the instant, explosive creativity (and the frightening absence of occupational health and safety precautions!) of these two. Diamond moment. Brilliant image. #thosewerethedays #jennybannister #youcantdothat #youcantdothatatmelbournemuseum #vamff #fashionlegends #melbournefashion #melbourne #andrejapejic #christophergraf #prueacton #stelladare #loispeeler #tiffanytreloar @vamff @jennybannister @melbournemuseum @museumsvictoria @theagephoto
