It’s ain’t a cake walk, altering the course of fashion culture, but we’ve got a cracking history of Precocious Melbournians who did just that. It’s one of myriad reasons we’re the fashion capital, an offbeat city with a penchant for the Self Expressive. And it’s the backbeat of You Can’t Do That, a gorgeous, absorbing, softlit, beautifully coloured and conceived little exhibition at Melbourne Museum and on the VAMFF arts programme, of rebel legends including Andreja Pejic, Jenny Bannister, Christopher Graf, Prue Acton and Lois Briggs (our first Indigenous Australian fashion model). I spoke at it’s opening tonight, for an audience sprinkle pod with actual breathing rebel legends who lived that war cry “Yes I Bloody Can!” One of my many highlights (it was a fabulous party!) was quietly observing curly blonde bombshells Prue and Jenny conferring over lipsticks with hoots and giggles before their doubleportrait for the Herald Sun. Diamond.
