Practicing Without Permission: An Artist Lecture by Christy Chan
ABOUT Artist Lecture: The story of the United States has always been intertwined with the ongoing legacy of white supremacy. Who gets to tell that story — and how — is part of the battleground of American culture. Visual artist and filmmaker Christy Chan discusses her studio process and methodologies for questioning power systems through art.
ABOUT Artist: Christy Chan is a Bay Area-based artist whose practice combines filmmaking, installation, storytelling, photography and community organizing to create participatory platforms for dialogue around race, class and social justice issues. Her public art projects seek to foster opportunities for self-representation by communities of color, with the belief that storytelling is a form of narrative justice and narrative justice is a form of social justice. Her recent public art projects include Inside Out (2018), Everybody Eats Lunch (2019), All Is Not Lost (2020) and the mobile, guerrilla project Dear America (2021). She has been awarded residencies and support from Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Montalvo Arts Center, Mills College Art Museum, SFFILM, Kala Art Institute, Southern Exposure, and other institutions. Her artworks and stories questioning white supremacy culture in America have been featured in The New York Times, Hyperallergic and NPR's Snap Judgment, among other forums. Chan is the current Art and Process and Ideas visiting artist at Mills College Art Museum. She holds an M.A. in Communication Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University.
