To me what makes DE so fascinating is that her very existence is so conflicting. In her description she’s literally made of the most evil shit possible like literal dark magic and poison. She has a very evil and destructive nature, willing to do anything to get back at her creators. But she’s also made with and sort of was WL. WL loved cookies wanting to help them more than anything so it’s likely part of that is now with DE despite everything DE is. If only she weren’t so full of hate and rage.

So like!!!! In chapter 10, we LITERALLY GET THIS LINE

THAT IS WHITE FUCKING LILY TALKING AND YOU CANT TELL ME OTHERWISE!!!!!! Dark Enchantress had secluded herself to ponder her past mistakes when she was white lily. dark enchantress is insistent on declaring that shes cast aside her time as white lily, and that its nothing more than a “fragment” of her past, and yet she stops to think back on how her use of dark moon magic caused the cookies of pure vanillas kingdom to basically reject her as evidenced by this memory:

AND LEST WE FUCKING FORGET.

pure vanilla. pure vanillas best friend is still in there, deep down inside of Dark Enchantress. for someone who’s renounced her former self, SHE SURE DOES CLING TO THE PAST. her love and care for pure vanilla transcends her very dough. it is, dare i FUCKING say, literally baked into her. Pomegranate, who can look into the minds of others (or something like that) with her mirror, sees it.

of course, immediately following this, dark enchantress gets pissed because she thinks pom is calling her weak, and pom covers it up with her expert kiss-assery, but we all know that, despite pom being a rot-hearted bitch, shes cunning as hell. pom knows of the effect pure vanilla has on her master. she can see that theres still something for him in that twice-baked heart of hers. but she doesnt say it, because shes not about to anger her beloved.

and then. oh. and then. the confrontation

THIS. FUCKING. LINE. IS EVERYTHING. What had the white lily reflection been so intent on???? Pure vanillas smile. 

what broke white lily was when pure vanilla stopped smiling at her. she craves his acceptance. his approval. he was her best friend, and she, his. and when he stopped smiling at her, when he looked upon her work with contempt and worry and even disgust, it broke her.

and dark enchantress remembers. dark enchantress still cares for his approval, for his smile, for him, as evidenced by her line about his last smile. white lily, the ambitious scientist who only wants to help the world, is still in there. if she wasnt, dark enchantress would not give a single shit about her past, as she insists she does, but i think we all know otherwise.
