Alexandrite opened their eyes with a small groan, laying in bed as they pushed their hair out of their face so they could see the other side of their room. A sigh left with mouth as they sat up from their bed, grabbing their phone underneath their pillow and looked through their notifications. After going through all off the apps to eliminate all of the useless notifications before going to one of their texting apps. Their expectations of having a ‘good morning’ text or something was shot down since as soon as they logged on they got a message that simple said “Medicine”.
The teal gem frowned and looked at it for a couple of seconds before they replied “if I take them then can we call before you go to sleep?”
“Yea, but I probably can’t video call though since Lapis is waltzing around without a shirt or pants.”
“Typical thing for them.”
They placed their phone down back on their bed before they got up and went to their friends bedroom. They looked at the short haired yellow gem lay in the dark with their face illuminated from their light before they knocked on the doorframe. “Where are the keys to the medicine drawer?”
“The same place they always are.”
“Thanks for being helpful.”
“No problem.”
Alexandrite flipped on the light switch before they walked over to the bedside table and grabbed the ring of small keys that looked like they came from a child’s diary book. “Where’s Pad?”
Yellow turned around and looked at them, “I’m surprised you didn’t hear them leave. They left around midnight to hang out Rutile.”
“Mmm, predictable.” They muttered before they started to head out of their roommates room.
The teal haired gem shared a dorm with both of their really good friends Padparadscha and Yellow Diamond. It was pretty much agreed by everyone they knew that they couldn’t take care of themselves on their own, so they decided to move in together. Most of the time it was just the three of them lying in bed doing nothing for a week and when they weren’t going that they were either being productive or getting super drunk.
Yellow was the most responsible one and made sure no one accidentally killed themselves from something. Pad was M.I.A most of the time either banging their partner, Rutile and if they weren’t with them they were in the hospital. And they all agreed that Alex was there for moral support, they didn’t really do anything special in the house besides decide what they were going to do.
“Are you going to be going anything?”
“No. Are you planning on calling Chryso?”
“Yea.”
Their friend flashed them a thumbs up, “alright, I won’t make a sound.”
They went to the kitchen and unlocked the medicine drawer before taking out the ones with their name around the bottle. Using all of their morning strength to pop open the white lid and slid out what they needed before putting it on the counter. They got whatever else they needed to get before they got water, took whatever medicine they needed to take, and went back to their room.
The teal gem plopped down on their bed and grabbed their phone and texted the other back, waiting for about a minute the device rung. “Took you awhile to get back to me.” Chryso replied the moment the other answered.
“I had to talk to Yellow about something before I came back.”
“Yeah right,” they scoffed, a small laugh leaving their lips as they typed away at something, “did you take your medicine?”
“Yea, I did, you don’t need to tell me twice.”
“Do I? Because last time we called you lied and then got sick later one. I just want to make sure that you’re doing okay.”
Alex let out a small sigh and ran their fingers through their messy bangs, “how’s the studying going?”
“It’s going pretty good, I’m ready to get it over with though so I can have time to do other things.”
“I feel like that’s a lie.”
“It partially is.”
Chrysoberyl was Alexandrite’s partner of 2 years, the both of them living a long distance relationship and met each other in person twice. Both visits were to meet their parents to prove that they weren’t some 50 year old man and they were actually who they said they were. The couple were really close regardless of living across the globe and having little time to talk before going to sleep. Some people were surprised to know they that haven’t broken it off yet— but that option didn’t sound like a solution to either of them.
They met in a group chat and didn’t start talking until they got into a heated discussion about something stupid that both disagreed on. Both found the other interesting and after a couple of months of discussions and arguments, they started dating.
Half of the time when they spoke was either made up of discussions or studying for something, but they were happy just to talk to the other about something.
“How’s Lapis doing?” Alex asked, laying down on the bed and getting comfortable again.
“They’re alive,” Chrysoberyl let out a gentle sigh and they started to type up something again. “They got back home from the hospital and they’ve reclaimed the apartment and is destined to make it messy or something.”
“Why were they in the hospital?”
“Another surgery. I guess that the last time they went didn’t really fix anything so they had to go back.”
“Dang… are they upset to lose all of their hair?”
“You know it. They threw a fit the day before they had-“
“You’re talking about me behind my back now?” Lapis asked, their voice steadily growing louder as they walked closer to the other.
“I don’t think that I’m necessarily doing that, but I’m definitely exposing you.”
“Do you do this often?”
“If I’m talking about you, then yes.”
There was a sound of a smack from the younger gem and the two started to laugh together, a twinge in Alex’s chest from hearing them.
Lapis Lazuli was Chrysoberyl’s roommate and childhood friend, which wasn’t surprising since the both of them were incredibly smart and probably read textbooks as a hobby. They were charming, deceptive, smart, and they had just about a million things that were wrong with their head. From what they knew, they were just like Padparadscha— living in and out hospitals from having one surgery after another.
Alexandrite wasn’t that fond of them, they were nice to talk to and might consider them to be a friend, but they didn’t like them all too much. It wasn’t common for them to interrupt them while they were in a call and take Chryso’s focus from what they were talking about. Even though they were the ones dating, it wasn’t common for them to feel like they’ve become the third wheel.
As much as they hated to admit it, it wasn’t unusual for a bad thought to enter their head about the blue haired gem.
They listened to the two talk about school and other stuff for a little bit before they started to considering about hanging up. They thought about what they could do with Yellow for the time being and tried to remember where Rutile lived if they wanted to hang out with them— despite them being the third wheel there too. When they were about to hang up, the door on the other end of the line opened and closed. “Sorry about that, I hope that you weren’t waiting too long.”
“It’s fine, don’t worry about it.”
Chrysoberyl let out a soft hum, being quiet on their end for a little bit before they started typing away at something again. “I’m going turn on my camera, is that fine with you?”
“Yea, of course it is. You don’t have to ask me that.”
Their lips form into a smile as they listen to the other laugh from their reply, “okay, give me a second.” A few clicking and dragging of the mouse was audible before the small screen on Alex’s phone had a somewhat dark picker pop up.
Their teal eyes watched a figure move in the dark space because something flicked and the room lit up as Christmas light around the room turned on. It was then, in that moment, was then when the teal gem was reminded of why they they fell in love with the other in the first place.
Thin eyes with long yellow eyelashes looked back at them with their light pink lips turned up in a gentle smile, their long hair pushed onto one side of their head. The lights from the small bulbs made each strand shine brilliantly like the sun, making their lovely face stand out more. Alex could only imagine how beautiful they look in the daylight and how nice they would looks with each strand of hair flowing in the wind.
Chrysoberyl also has the chin and jawline of an actual god as well. It always seemed like a blessing to see a picture or in a call with them and seeing how nice it was with their own eyes. The top of their jaw and chin being illuminated by the light provided and their neck being dark from the shadows. The gem that they were so in love with was a complete blessing that Alexandrite didn’t deserve in their life.
Their thin hand came up and moved the thin strands of hair off of their long neck and behind their shoulder. It was a simple move that didn’t mean much, but it was done elegantly and oh so beautifully.
The teal gem sighed and rested their chin on the palm of their hand, looking at the other on their screen dreamily. They tilted their head to the side after a few seconds and then collapsed onto their bed, looking at their lover through the messy hair that was in their face. Their silence and collapse seemed to worry the other, “is everything okay?”
“Yea, I was just busy looking at how pretty you look.”
The both of them let out a soft chuckle from the sad excuse of a flirtatious remark. “What about you? It’s been a while since I’ve seen your face?”
“I don’t want to ruin your eyes from my horrible appearance.”
“Please??”
“But my hair is really messy.”
“What if I want to see your messy hair? It’s a rare occurrence that I get to your hair messed up.”
Alexandrite sighed, realizing that they couldn’t win the battle that they were having with the other. “Why are you doing this?”
“Because I love you,” Chrysoberyl sang, a laugh leaving their lips as they moved their head to the side.
“Let me go get a brush…” they muttered, finally giving up and surrendering to the other. The teal gem left their phone on the bed as they got up and traveled to the bathroom, grabbing their brush on the countertop and going back to their room.
