Chthonic & Chthonian Theoi
What is the difference, why does it matter?
Many people — including me up until maybe 2-4 months ago did not know there was a difference in the words chthonic and chthonian.
Let me first explain why it is so important to separate the words and meanings.
We need to first recognize that this does not only play part in the religion, but it is also an ancient language.
Switching the words or meanings, or even just ignoring them all together is harmful of the language and ancient culture.
Now we will get into CHTHONIC
Many people, which included me — thought this word meant underworld gods. Which makes sense since when you only search up the meaning of the word, most people only look at the ai overview which concludes that this word means underworld.
This is incorrect, looking into the Oxford handbook we can see that the word actually has ties into the country, it is relating to agricultural theoi.
Χθών .. khthṓn .. khthonic .. chthonic
Now, chthonian. It’s the same issue, many people don’t know I didn’t know and so on.
This is what people think chthonic means, it means indigenous to the underworld.
χθόνιος .. khthónĭos .. khthonian .. chthonian
Further add onto why this matters
When studying scholarly books like Ancient Greek Cults by Jennifer Larson, Sharing with the Gods Aparchai and Dekatai in Ancient Greece by Theodora Suk Fong Jim, The Oxford Handbook of Ancient Greek Religion Esther Eidinow and Julia Kindt, and MANY MANY other books, we can see chthonian used to speak of the underworld gods.
In the same books + Smoke Signals for the Gods Ancient Greek Sacrifice from the Archaic through Roman Periods F. S. Naiden we can see chthonic used in the context of agricultural gods.
Though I do want to add that these titles do not have a set deity list of course, for example Poseidon has a CHTHONIC epithet during a festival to protect sea side plants… but he isn’t JUST a chthonic god, the same way hades isn’t just a CHTHONIAN god, but his CHTHONIC counterpart Plouton existed and that’s what was worshipped rather then hades. Some gods like the furies were ONLY CHTHONIAN, and some gods like Gaia were ONLY CHTHONIC.
This all is just to help make sense of scholarly text… and not spread misinfo.
