General’s Lady

So, you know how YouTube recommends you things you would like? :D I guess according to them, I’m a big fan of anything Asian, so recently, a scene from a chinese historical drama has popped up on my dash, and since I’m a huge sucker for the whole “leading lady gets married to someone important who then defends her from her family who bully her” trope, I wasted no time clicking on the scene from this drama. I liked the actors, so I went to see what this drama was about and decided to watch the first couple of episodes. Long story short, I finished it today :D and here’s my review.

The story is pretty straightforward. The leading lady - Shen Jin - is the third daughter of Duke Rui, who is a member of the royal family (like a distant cousin, not sure). The first daughter is married, the second and fourth daughter bully, (well try to bully, because she’s pretty witty and knows how to defend herself) Shen Jin. The male lead is a famous general who has protected the borders for many years, so people in the capital (where Shen Jin lives with her family) don’t really know much about him other than: 1. He is called the Demon General 2. He is a mighty warrior and an excellent leader. 3. The Emperor kind of likes him/favours him. The Emperor decides that the time has come for the General to take a wife, so he bestows the honour on the 2nd daughter of Rui family. She makes a scene about not wanting to get married to a demon and her mother scheme a bit to get Jin married to him. Jin travels to the border to get married, gets attacked on the way, gets rescued by her future husband and, comically, gets left behind in the woods, walks on foot to General’s mansion, sneaks in over the wall, confuses the general (who she thinks has to be scary looking) for an attendee, and basically wreaks chaos on the household because she’s not a timid little thing, she knows how to stand up for herself. At the same time, the general thinks that this is another one of the spies sent to spy on him (his previous wives to be were all spies) so there’s a lot of misunderstanding all around. Now, mind you...this is all in the FIRST episode. :D And the rest of the story goes standardly - they get to know each other, there is some court drama and intrigue, a mystery to be solved and many sappy moments. I loved it all.

WHAT I LOVED:

- the fact that the plot moves quite quickly, they don’t take forever to fall in love and be together, I think the whole falling in love gets done in about 4 episodes.

- the characters. the general, although cold and aloof in the beginning, gradually changes as he spends more time with her, and turns into such a devoted, loyal husband who is also very romantic. Shen Jin is also a pretty good character, often very funny and comedic, sometimes a bit irritating and immature (the general once says that he finds her foolishness and childishness adorable, even though it often lands him in trouble). She can stand up for herself and doesn’t hesitate to point out if something isn’t right. She’s also very clever and has helped her husband with his duties on various occasions.

Also, the servants and assistants play a major role, they are all pretty good. The main ones being Cutie Pie (Shen Jin’s maid), Liutenant (general’s right hand and adopted brother), Panther-head (part of general’s army)...

- the music. Although one main song is heard most of the time, especially during the romantic scenes, it’s a pretty good one, and I never got tired of hearing it.

- the fact that they didn’t shy away from physical touch. They shared many kisses throughout the series.

- the fact that the whole royal court intrigues part wasn’t very dark or stretched. It was just enough :)

What I liked less, but didn’t mind:

- the occasional lack of communication between Shen Jin and the general which led to misunderstanding and a prolonged conflict. But it wasn’t very often.

- Shen Jin’s foolishness at times.

All in all, I really enjoyed watching this cdrama. Here’s a little picture of the main couple (from the intro).
