Some information about the Chulym language:

It’s critically endangered, meaning there are very few native speakers left, who are also elderly, and young people are not picking up the language. Chulym

We watched a movie in my Extinction class about endangered languages. There were 3 languages it focused on; Kallawaya in Bolivia, Sora in India, and Chulym in Siberia.

I really loved the sound of the Chulym language. Which had last been researched in the 1960s. Only 9 speakers were found by the research team in Siberia, most were elderly. By 2008, 4 of them died.

I don't know why, but I felt really saddened by loosing that language. It's horrible, all the knowledge they had now forever lost.

One of them, a middle aged man, who spoke perfect Chulym explained that he was ashamed of speaking his language, by the majority language speakers. He hid the fact that he spoke Chulym from the researchers until he came across an elderly speaker.

The story of Chulym hit hard. I don't know why, but it was just really sad. I hope that there are still some speakers of Chulym still alive and speaking strong.
