Brands Too Big to Fail?
The conservative reformed camp has taken some blows of late:
First Doug Phillips has his scandal. This was genuinely tragic.
Then Mark Driscoll. This was too was sad, but let’s say somewhat expected. Perhaps this was ungodly cynicism, yet it did seem inevitable. And now he is promptly making a comeback, which despite the millions he has made, you can donate to on his personal ministry’s website.
Then Tullian Tchividjian was deposed. Sad. But it became less sad as he almost perversely relished in ‘grace’ while passive aggressively pointing out that his sin happened because his wife sinned first - “Hello Adam meet Tullian, Tullian say hi to Adam”. Despite publishing many successful books, pastoring a megachurch he lamented how he would pay the bills. Pay the bills? He made in a decade more than most will make in two lifetimes! What was that about? Alas we digress.
Now RC Sproul Jr. has been suspended. Not the hugest fan of RC Jr but this is genuinely sad too, perhaps more so because he was only ‘suspended’ as he is not in the church per se but a parachurch ministry that is run by his father.
Our hearts genuinely break when families become undone. This is egregious in the truest sense.The sin is human and understandable - but gutwrenchingly painful. Beyond this, we firmly believe that our actions should be restorative and not punitive. We believe that.
YET, the suspension of RC, the prompt reinstatement of Tullian (by another church) and Driscoll’s comeback though independent are equally heartbreaking.
How do we practice restorative justice, promote humility and selflessness when the individual has become a brand? Does the limelight always have to follow? Can they only be successful ministers of the gospel when their lives are high profile and their ministry dependent on big money? Is their identity in the brand?
