bronson sat in his car shivering, parked outside of the phan’s. if there was anyone still doubting the coming snow storm, all they would have to do was step outside into the freezing cold. it had seemed to him pointless, returning home only for the school to close down and all practices be called off – he hadn’t even been back for 48 hours but still felt an urgent need to get out of the house. driving to hers hadn’t been part of any plan, more of a ( or a few ) inveterated turns of the steering wheel. the thought of backing around the corner crossed his mind, but instead he stepped out into the cold and threw the door shut behind him. pull it together. last time he’d been there was when they had ended their relationship and he couldn’t help but feel as though only a third of him had really left that night, another broken and the third still hers. a part of him might always belong to charli, he thought.
as he rang the doorbell, he thought of how he never really got to say goodbye, though he thought maybe that was his own fault. his fault for thinking that somewhere in her kisses, promises and smiles there had been an apology hidden somewhere. but there had been no « i’m sorry i’m doing this to you » and no other explanation for the way she had left, or why it had even happened in the first place. ( though he was just as complicit to it all, himself. ) one could say he was confused, or still in love, at this point he wasn’t sure which might be worse. it had been well over a month and he still lay awake some nights, wondering if she could have already forgotten the sound of his laugh or the reasons why him and his father hadn’t been getting along lately. all of it was very unlike him, so he thought he must be kidding himself because it must have been childish to think someone who almost loved him still cared enough to wonder if he’d slept alright the night before, right ? childish to think that someone who had sworn they’d never get him out of their head still might remember his favourite colour and story behind his middle name, right ? he didn’t get the chance to figure out if so, before the door opened in front of him. he raised his glance with a smile on his lips and said, speaking softly « mind if i come in ? »
