Scottish Culture final piece

Final Piece:

So for my final piece, i decided to use Glasgows motto "People Make Glasgow" as its a very detersive motto as it never states what group of people its aimed at but as its mostly used to create tourism in Glasgow, its gonna be allocated to the better off, ambitious and well kept people when in reality, that isn't the case. I tried to be as loyal to the brief as possible while giving my own interpretation on Scottish Culture. I originally thought about all the things i consider in Scottish Culture such as the stereotypical things like famous landmarks, cities, food, clothing ect but i didn’t 100% feel happy with going that path, so i tried to look at the phrase “Scottish Culture” in a new perspective and show that as much as everything in our culture is very beautiful and diverse, theres alot of poverty and struggle under the mask that the rest of the world don’t see when they first think of our country.

Overall i think my piece does succeed but i feel like i could have done more in terms of showing in more detail and depth in my piece.

The Glasgow "Ned"

When people think of the East End of "Deprived areas", "Ned" (Non Educated Delinquent) is always one of the few named groups of people associated with it so i have created some work reflecting on how East End Architecture can affect a young persons demeanour and personality. 

I stared off with an outline of what i would consider “the stereotypical ned” and worked on using appropriate colour and images to reflect my original idea stated above. 

I played around and tried different visuals such as putting alot of images in the piece to make it more noisy and expansive to only putting a few to create more focus of what was happening.

I tried different background colours to see how much focus they would generate to the image and give it a focal point.

Overall, these experiments where fun to do and as much as they aren’t very self explanatory, they do fit into my interpretation and a big  part of what i consider Scottish Culture to be.

"Top Reasons to Visit Glasgow"

I found a blog which gives reasons to visit Glasgow and i found it interesting on how they only mention the good things and mostly the west end but never mention the east end areas, so i created a piece based around that blog

The reason for my initial idea of this experiment was that i was reading alot of blogs about Scotlands tourism, mostly Glasgows (As its where i live) and from what i saw, the blogs barley any every mentioned the East End or any parts of Glasgow considered “rough” or “rundown”, almost like these places don’t exist when they’re in walking distance from landmarks and more well kept area. It just gives the impression that ignorance is bliss in alot of cases and almost like these areas are considered embarrassments that would be swept under the carpet rather than attempted to be fixed

Final artwork

I choose this one as a final artwork.

I tried quite a lots of different digital experiments, some of them worked fine but I always thought they are missing some warmth.

I like the handmade looking of this one and not perfect is so beautiful.

Also, I really enjoyed the workshops which I did on this class. I looked at all of them and pick up and tear the bits which I think really nice and beautiful. Especially, I’m really happy with the mono print clouds. It’s looks real looking!

I used brown wrapping paper for landscape. To make more texture, I crumped the paper.

If I could improve this one more, I would change the background color and try to erase white area. However, it might not work well. Also, use a sewing machine if I had more time.

Overall, I did enjoyed using some new techniques for this brief and this final piece is not my usual style so glad to see more potential in myself.

Standing stone collage and paper relief printing

I used cereal box to cut out standing stone shapes and print by pushing on some black stamp pads.

I think that pads were almost finish so couldn’t get enough colour which was disappointing but I painted with watercolor later.

Also, use different colors pads and made background then, this one got stained glass like effect.

Added a little details of ancient patterns with fine line pen.

I change the some layout of stones.

To get more textures and colors, I add brown paper and some other workshop prints.

I changed the colors only black and white by digitally.

More digital experiments

I did really enjoyed to do this woodblock printing for Towie ball pattern and sponge workshop.

So, I’ve got ideas to mix up these 2 artworks on digitally.

This one looks like an ancient print. I like the fading colors and feeling magical power from it.

It could be the final art, too.

Changed some positions.

Colors and black and white one.

Combine with the Lino cut print.

Collage 2

I did a couple of more collages for standing stones. I use old book pages and made stone shapes and with color paper made landscape.

I think using written paper was unique but I felt these words are not belong to standing stone so felt strange.

I quite enjoyed finding the right color papers and positions for this collage.

I play with colors, patterns and texture. I especially love the fabric texture pieces. It gives this a soft and pretty images.

I wanted to see how this looks like on digital.

Used Ibis paint X to change colors and then use stained glass effect in the end one.

I think the last one looks really good but if I could make it better, I would use thicker black lines around standing stones to make them stand out more next time.

I tried a couple of collages to use some workshop’s prints. I pick up the one which I really like and cool.
