Why do cats get away with being assholes?
We know we project our human values onto cats, but we find entertainment when they do the wrong thing. They are they sassy creatures that are selfish and can be jerks but it’s so lovable. Yet dogs can’t do it? Why?
There’s this unwritten rule that “dogs must be loyal, if they do the wrong thing (unless they’re amazingly cute) they will be punished”. Especially if they’re bigger, older, uglier. As loyal companions, which have been known to even save human lives and assist humanity, they have that role to maintain.
Cats on the other hand.. well simply put, they are feline, sassy creatures with an attitude. But they are smaller, lighter, more feminine and gentle than dogs. They can basically do whatever the hell they want. But they’re innocent- we can’t hold it against them. That’s THEIR role.
I wonder if it’s a first-world western thing, to worship cats. Would other cultures be less inclined to? Maybe third-worlds where cats ravage the streets like rats, this is seen as ‘pest’ behaviour. In first worlds ‘cute’ things have so much value whereas in non-western countries people don’t have the luxury to worry about superficial things like that.
Just a quick thought.
