For #WomensHistoryMonth we’re highlighting Firelei Báez’s “Ciguapa Antellana, me llamo sueño de la madrugada. (who more sci-fi than us)” (2018) at the 163 St-Amsterdam Ave (C) station, where the larger than life ciguapas (powerful convention-breaking feminine figures from Dominican folklore) immersed in tropical greenery intertwined with multicultural healing imagery, join passengers on the daily commute. Báez reworks diasporic history in her explorations of feminine mythology and artifacts overlaid onto large-scale maps and documents in her new exhibition at James Cohan Gallery, open through April 25th.

9. a bleeding / bloody kiss

❝     𝐈'𝐌   𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐄 ,     es  solamente  un  rasguño ,     ❞     voice  cracked ,  intertwined  with  pain . completely  evident ,  revealing  he  wasn’t  as  strong  as  this  mask  he  wore  too  often  projected .  though  by  the  looks  of  the  gashes  all  over ,  how  could  he  be ?    he  wasn’t  superman .     body  needs  support   &   so  he  leans  against  the  wall  nearby .  eyes  attached  to  her . curious  as  to  what  she’s  thinking .  only  slightly  worried  that  her  perception  of  him  was  changing.   his  hand  begins  to  hold  his  other  arm ,  the  pain  connected  was  too  much  to  bare  without  some  sort  of  grip .   𝐏𝐎𝐑 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑 𝐍𝐎 𝐌𝐄 𝐌𝐈𝐑𝐄𝐒 𝐀𝐒𝐈 ,     he  could  see  it  had  an  effect  on  her .  blood  trickles  from  his  brow  onto  his  cheek  down  to  his  chin . skin  begins  to  show  signs  of  bruising . he  was  broken , but  would  never  admit  to  it .

his  sigh  is  strained  while  he  tries  to  remain  composed .  leans  forward ,  hovering  over  her  a  bit .  he’s  looking  a  bit  too  deeply  at  her .   ❝   𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 ,    debe   amarme   realmente .   ❞     tongue  glides  along  his  lips ,  before  he’s  leaning  down  a  bit  to  press  their  lips  together .  his  kiss  is  deep ,  passionate .  trying  to  convince  her  he  was  perfectly  fine .     ❝   miro , estoy bien .   ❞

as  much  as  he’s  had  his  fair  share  of   staring  off   into  oblivion ,  he’s  quite  good  at   focusing   too . in  his  line  of  work  it’s  a   must .  focusing  on  what  you  want   &   how  you’ll  get  it  by   any  means  necessary .      ❝    ay ,  quieres  hablar  o mirar fijamente  ?     ❞      he  smirks  though  still  a  bit   bothered   by  it .     ❝    eres  bonita  así que lo dejo pasar .    ❞      𝐀 𝐌𝐀𝐍 𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐇𝐄 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐀 𝐖𝐀𝐘 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐃𝐒 .    &    soon  enough  he’s  looking  away  at  the   surroundings ,  but  eyes  come  right back  to  her .     ❝    don’t think i’ll let it slide  twice  though .  it can be mad  creepy  if someone’s jus’ starin’ at you all  bug eyed .    ❞

so  he’s  parked  outside   tapping  the  steering  wheel   to  a  song  playing  from  his  phone .    be a gentleman .    well  since  she  had  asked  so  nicely  he  figured  he’d   comply .  first ,  he  pauses  the  song  then  he’s  ringing  the  bell   &   running  back  to  the  car  to  open  the  door  on  the  passengers  side .    que sonrisa .     kind  eyes ,   with  a  look  to  them .  almost  as  if  you  could  see  𝐡𝐢𝐬  𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 ,  though  we  know   it’s  not  all  there .  once  they’re  in  the  car  he’s  smirking .  finger  proceeds  to  press  play  again .    ❝   es que me gustas tú na' más , no me importan las demás,   ❞  planned .  yes ,  he’s  got  a  plan  in  motion .  if  it  gets  her  laughing  he  figures  it’ll  be  a  good  night .    ❝   you  gotta  love  this  song   if  you  wanna  stay  in  the  car .  ❞
