“To breathe full and free: a declaration, a revisioning, a correction” by Firelei Baez
For #WomensHistoryMonth we’re highlighting Firelei Báez’s “Ciguapa Antellana, me llamo sueño de la madrugada. (who more sci-fi than us)” (2018) at the 163 St-Amsterdam Ave (C) station, where the larger than life ciguapas (powerful convention-breaking feminine figures from Dominican folklore) immersed in tropical greenery intertwined with multicultural healing imagery, join passengers on the daily commute. Báez reworks diasporic history in her explorations of feminine mythology and artifacts overlaid onto large-scale maps and documents in her new exhibition at James Cohan Gallery, open through April 25th.

If you love Firelei Báez’s vibrant installation at the 163 Street-Amsterdam Av (C train) station (detail pictured here), then you will be happy to know you can see more of her work in NYC this spring! “A Drexcyan Chronocommons (To win the war you fought it sideways)”, an exhibition of her new work opening tonight at James Cohan Gallery, includes an immersive installation (pictured) and recent paintings, shining a light on black diasporic symbols of nurturing and resistance. You can also see her work in En Plein Air on the Highline (at 20th Street) depicting a Haitian Sans-Souci Palace ruin that appears to sink into the ground.
It’s Dominican Independence Day! Firelei Báez’s artwork at 163rd St-Amsterdam Av (C train) in Washington Heights is situated in a community reported to house the largest Dominican population outside of Santo Domingo. In the artist’s words about her tropical mosaic installation, “I wanted…residents to be able to say ‘this is me’ or ‘this is something I recognize as my own’. She added, “I wanted Dominicans to just revel in it”. The azabaches, ciguapas and other cultural symbols speak of place and the station is well worth a visit!
