hey have you considered the version of porters ascension that required him to rid himself of all his mortal possessions? the one where he never stopped to think that it meant people, too? that it meant jace?
hey are you listening? jace knew the whole time. jace knew to follow him would mean his death with no way out. he knew and he followed him anyways because he loves him and he believes in him. so every time porter asks why he feels like he’s forgetting something, jace tells him that it’s fine, everything is fine. everything is in order, he checked. don’t worry, baby. ive got it covered.
and then he’s standing there and porter has won the battle but he hasn’t ascended and he doesn’t understand so he’s turning to jace, who has tears pouring down his face, who has a dagger in his hand and holds it out to porter and says “all your mortal possessions, my love.” and porter understands now, but he’s refusing, he’s shaking his head and stepping back from jace because no, no, what was the point of all of this if it didn’t mean he’d have jace forever?
jace had a plan for that too. kipperlilly was hidden in the shadows, her own poison dagger sheathed by her side. she knew to wait, to give him a moment, but if porter didn’t do it, she had to. if he wouldn’t do it willingly, she had to make him angry enough ascend anyways. it was a death sentence, but who cares? that was always the point of this. porter, a god. jace, dead at his feet.
hey, did you hear me? he was always going to die, no matter what. porter would never be able to save him. either porter was a god or porter had jace, and there is no way for him to ever have both. jace knew the choice porter would make if he knew the reality, so he didn’t give him the choice at all.
