i keep seeing people make broad, sweeping statements about project hail mary- specifically about Eva Stratt and it just. I need to be so so so so so clear that they softened her considerably for the movie. Book Eva is not… gentle. She doesn’t give a speech about how she isn’t betraying Ryland, she’s believing in him- she tells him he has no family, no pets, and she was always planning to send him to space against his will if she had to.

And the movie doesn’t touch on it, but there WAS a fourth option. There was another volunteer for the scientist position who was coma resistant and could have been being trained the entire time. Grace did not HAVE to be the tertiary scientist. She made the choice to NOT train that scientist and instead send Grace against his will.

And yes, he’s the main character and without that choice we wouldn’t have a book and blah blah blah but i’m not talking about why Andy Weir chose to send Grace, i’m talking about Eva Stratt. And Eva Stratt did not do it because she believed in him. She did it because she believed it was best and did not consider Grace or his autonomy at any point.

And in the book, he isn’t knocked out immediately. He sits in a cell, knowing he’s going to die and unable to doc anything about it because he knows at the end of the day, when Eva Stratt has decided something, it will happen. THEN he’s drugged and knocked unconscious and forcibly boarded on the ship.

This is not hate for Eva btw, that’s my girl, she was in an impossible position and did what she thought she needed to in order to save the human race. I deeply empathize with her and how difficult all of it must have been for her to live with.

But that doesn’t mean she didn’t do a shitty fucking thing. She did. And we don’t need to soften her up to make it more palatable.

Project hail Mary AU where everything is the same except whilst Grace is in a coma, he dreams of Simon.

He dreams of going through the horrors of the iron lung with him. He’s horrified when he wakes up and thinks it was just some fucked up ass coma dream.

But it wasn’t. Because when Grace and Rocky find the SM-13, Grace starts to feel himself panic and him and Rocky get the sub open and Grace is relieved to see simon is relatively alive.

Meanwhile, Simon swears on his fucking life that whilst he was in that sub he saw a blonde haired man who was freaking the fuck out in there with him and he doesn’t know if it was the eel, lack of oxygen or what but the last thing he sees is that same man pulling him out of the sub into what looks like what he imagines heaven to be. A white fucking void.

I've read a lot of fanfics so far~ It was cool, I liked it ( ＾◡＾)っ ♡ It's just that Simon often calls Grace Angel at the beginning of fanfics, because Grace doesn't stink xd ____________________________ I was a little sad to find so little monster romance here… also, I almost didn't find any AUs with normal circumstances like a teacher and his favorite weird gaming YouTuber who grew up in a religious cult~ These are rather my problems xd

It feels like authors often go looking for an explanation of how physics works and somehow end up writing an isekai instead xd I'm grumbling because I hate wormholes. My head starts to hurt whenever I try to think about black holes... But there was this incredible 6,000 word fanfic where Simon's world didn't suffer the death of the stars at all a handful of space stations slipped into a dimensional pocket (Damn, is this a wormhole?)

I also found a fanfic where the author isn't afraid to just use mythology and soulmates outright as a way to connect different worlds~ I think that's why people love Interstellar~ Love is a writer's magic wand, and with it you can smack logic in the face until it dies <3 But I love every idea, I enjoyed reading all the fanfics! Thanks so much to the authors for their hard work~

let me elaborate even though i didn’t want to: when the point is privilege, he’s just a rich white man. his jewishness disappears into whiteness, because acknowledging it would require people to think with a little more nuance about how jewish people can be perceived differently in different contexts. but the second people want to turn him into some kind of uniquely sinister figure, suddenly the language starts looking very familiar to me and to other jewish fans.

he’s “demonic”, he looks “satanic”, he’s secretly controlling everything behind the scenes. he’s allegedly harming actors he doesn’t like. he has this hidden power over the workplace, over the show, over people’s careers, over the rest of the writers, over the SHOWRUNNER. he will fire fellow cast members that piss him off or are “too progressive” to his liking. and whether people intend it or not, that is not neutral language when it is being aimed at a jewish man, because this is the thing: antisemitism is not just slurs and swastikas, and a lot of the time it works through older narrative patterns. the jew as secretly powerful, the jew as manipulative, the jew as corrupting, the jew as physically marked by evil. the jew as someone who tries to appear respectable in public while supposedly pulling the strings in private. those ideas have been around for a very long time, and they do not suddenly become harmless because the people saying them are in a fandom space and think they are just “criticizing a celebrity.”

and to be clear, this doesn’t mean ashkenazi jews are never white, or that jewish celebrities can’t have white privilege, class privilege, or industry power. the point is that jewishness does not always fit neatly into the sometimes flattened american white/non-white framework we’re all familiar with. ashkenazi jews can be perceived as white, move through the world with many of the advantages of whiteness, and still be racialized through antisemitism when the context shifts. that conditional quality matters. jewishness can be treated as irrelevant when people want to talk about privilege, then suddenly become legible through conspiratorial or dehumanizing tropes when people want to construct a jewish person as dangerous.

just like with every other minority, you do not have to personally believe you are being bigoted for the shape of your argument to fall into harmful patterns. and if your criticism of a jewish public figure keeps circling around secret control, behind-the-scenes manipulation, career destruction, satanic/demonic appearance, and moral contamination, then you should take another good fucking look at yourself.
