     more pain for @cintraking​

she walks with purpose to his door , intent on apologizing for rejecting his proposal. calanthe is stuck somewhere between being in love with him and feeling obligations towards her kingdom. she stands before the oak door for several long moments , unable to decide what she should say. how could she apologize to him and still reject his proposal ? how could she explain that something deep inside her wanted nothing more than to be with him , but she felt stuck and confused. she'd almost convinced herself to turn around and leave when she hears a noise from inside the room , brows furrow as she tries to decipher it. concern and guilt mesh together and she finally brings herself to knock on the door sharply.

the question hits her hard , like a slap in the face. in all their years together , he had never spoken to her like that. he had never once turned her away or rejected her help. she takes a few steps back as she recovers from the harsh tone of his voice , solidifying herself and straightening her shoulders. since the day they got married , and perhaps even before that , they had faced everything as a team. always at each other’s side. but his cold tone and dismissal tells her something is different this time. but calanthe is a strong and stubborn woman , and she wouldn’t be turned away simply because he was angry.

brows draw together as she stares at him , ʺ eist. do not speak to me like that again ―――  ʺ she warns , her voice calm , but bearing the signs of an impending storm , a finger scolding him.  ʺ  i will certainly leave you be if that’s what you’d like. but i am your wife , and you will treat me with respect.

“Listen. Listen. Listen,” Jaskier mumbled, putting a hand on Eist’s shoulder with a slight sway. “What’s it going to take for me to take a ride--” he hiccuped. “--On one of your boats?” He turned, gesturing to no one in particular to yell, “the mighty boats of Skellige.”

                    “ oh!!      your   highness, ”                                             says   the   bard,   startled   to   have   stumbled   upon   him   in   his   own   castle.      he’d   been   looking   for   the   handmaiden’s   room...      “ my   sincerest   apologies,   your   grace! ”      he’s   stuttering   over   himself,   eyes   wild   as   he   glances   around   trying   to   come   up   with   a   lie.                 “ the   lavatory!      to...      relieve   myself.      all   that   ale! ”

they're both chained , tossed in a locked carriage on a hard floor. they're covered in the blood of battle , both suffering from rather minor wounds. she knows that no good will come of this. it would have been better they die upon the battlefield than end up prisoners. holding both the king and queen meant terrible things for her kingdom.

she knows that the only reason they're both/ there , is because they plan to use one as leverage against the other. more likely than not , it would work. she just doesn't know who they plan to hurt. surely she could withstand anything they had in mind , but she would not allow them to lay a finger upon her husband. it is that fact which incites fear inside of her. he must sense her fear , and that is why he offers his hand. calanthe reaches for it immediately , holding tight to him. she cannot lose him , and certainly not like this. surely they'd find a way out of this.
