half the time she feels as though she's babysitting him instead of married to him. she spends more time getting him out of trouble than their two children. she leans back against the wall , pinning him with a disappointed gaze and a twisted frown. he always does this. promises it's the last time he'll get thrown in here , swears up and down that he'll be a changed man. she's heard it before. he calls her baby and her lips purse as though she'd tasted something sour. funny how he doesn't come home , doesn't show any interest in their children , but the moment he needs help , she's his baby again.

ʺ  i'm gettin' a little tired of hearin' that speech , alex.  always the same fuckin’ thing , and then two weeks later we’re back in the same place. ʺ   she answers in an exhausted tone , reaching up to pinch the bridge of her nose. with a heavy exhale she steps closer to the bars and finally looks at him again. ʺ fine. i'll post your bail , as long as you come home tonight. those girls have been begging to see you all week and it's breaking my heart to have to have to tell them i don't know when you're coming home. or if you're coming home. they deserve better than that. ʺ  but then again , they deserved better from her too. they deserved a mom who was sober enough to remember to pack their lunches or pick them up from soccer practice.

she’d handed over all of her belongings at the entrance , was shuffled through metal detectors and wands and roaming hands that ensured she carried no weapon or contraband that she could sneak into the prisoner’s hands. she bites her lip through all of it , keeps her expression cold. she wants to be anywhere but here , but she’d showed up because he asked her to. because , presumably , he had nowhere else to turn. that didn’t mean she was going to be happy about it.

wayne leads her to the back room , where the cells and bars where all painted the same obnoxious shade of yellow. she’d seen the inside of these cells a few times , when she couldn’t keep her drinking under control and she was dragged there to dry off. she thanks wayne and he offers her a stiff smile before disappearing. colleen stood stiff beside the door , purse hanging from her elbow , arms crossed over her body , glare fixed on the man inside the cell. ʺ  you wanna tell me what the hell i’m doin’ here ?  ʺ  

exasperation sets in and she runs a hand over her face , feet carrying her back and forth in front of the cell , ʺ how many times do we have to do this , alex ? the club doesn’t exactly send home piles of money , i can’t keep bailing you out of here. ʺ
