Picture #10: Although Igor Gouzenko has constantly been described as a cipher clerk, no one ever remembers that he was also a highly educated man who loved literature. In his youth Igor Gouzenko wrote a lot of short stories as his widowed mother, a school teacher, and his grandmother instilled in him a love for the storyteller’s art. Unfortunately, as he grew older Gouzenko never had the time or the freedom to pursue his literature dreams. Finally after his defection, Igor Gouzenko was able to pursue his ambitions and published his own novel based on his life and defection in 1954, The Fall of a Titan, which was even awarded the Governor General’s award.
