How did Eyre get along with the Clone's under their command during the war?
very well! eyre was very close with the leadership in their battalion. the commander, named caelifer, was a soft-spoken and solemn young man who carried a heavy weight on his shoulders, not unlike eyre themself. they forged a connection through this, caelifer stepping up as an older brother and an advisor to eyre as well as their second-in-command. given that they were ranked the same—both commanders—they had equal authority over the battalion, but caelifer always deferred to eyre unless otherwise asked, which was actually a source of tension in their relationship. eyre, not even a jedi guardian but rather a scholar, felt immensely unqualified for leadership on the battlefield, but caelifer was resistant to the idea of taking charge over a jedi. it’s something they struggled to work through.
eyre is also close with the other members of leadership in their battalion—the captain and the cmo.
the captain, named vox, was loud and gregarious and found friends everywhere he went, so their friendship was one of the first eyre made with their battalion. they’re not incredibly close in the way that caelifer and eyre are, but they’re very familiar and very trusting of each other.
the cmo is named bona-fide, but generally goes by bona. they’re innovative, quick-witted, and whip-smart, but with a good sense of humor. they have a tendency to snap at everyone when stressed, regardless of rank, and bona has shuffled up to the door of eyre’s quarters well into their sleep schedule to apologize for any rude comments they may have made earlier more than once. eyre’s always happy to brush it off with a sleepy smile and invite them in for a late-night game of war or sabacc or to chat about any ideas bona may have had to improve life on the ship. they enjoy a more intellectual friendship, trading jabs and debate and strategy, even if strategy is neither of their specialties.
eyre tries to foster connection with all of their troopers, and many of them do end up viewing eyre as either a trustworthy leader or a little sibling. however, eyre is 16 at the beginning of the war and has no leadership experience—they make mistakes. sometimes, disastrous ones. though many troopers understand that they’re doing their best, there are still undercurrents of resentment flowing through the quietest whispers on their ship. their battalion functions well and is largely a good place to serve, but it is not perfect.
