And that’s a wrap on the shark and ray proposals!
Photo by @shawnheinrichs // This weekend the protection of endangered mako sharks and 17 other shark and ray species is up for a vote at #CoP18. We have the potential to ensure that these species, critical to the health of our ocean, earn the management and protection they need to recover. You can start #TurningTheTide for mako sharks today by signing the #CITES4Sharks petition linked in our bio, asking Canadian Ministers @jonathanwnv and @cathmckennaottcen to switch their vote from "NO" to "YES," ensuring the fastest shark in the world wins its race against extinction. We are SO CLOSE to reaching our goal! Sign now and support the mako shark's @CITES Appendix II listing. #TurningTheTide with @shawnheinrichs @SeaLegacy @bluespherefoundation @jim_abernethy @thelifeofrileynz @thewcs @sharkconservationfund https://www.instagram.com/p/B1UxFZ0JWah/?igshid=dzcqllk9v3yw
Today is a great day for sharks!
*a CITES Appendix II listing means that trade of these species, including lookalikes, will be closely controlled.
Image/text by @shawnheinrichs @sealegacy Breaking News - Mako sharks were just awarded a vital lifeline at #CoP18! The ongoing @CITES #CoP18 conference has voted to protect the endangered mako shark under #CITES Appendix II. This level of protection is critical to save the fastest shark in the world in its race against extinction. But our work is not over yet. This vote must be confirmed at the meeting's final plenary session later this week. Join us in keeping the attention on #CITES4Sharks and ensuring that this vote passes. With every signature and every post, you are creating a healthy and abundant ocean. We are grateful for your support! There is now hope for these 18 depleted species. 💙🦈 #Repost @bluespherefoundation // BREAKING NEWS: Mako sharks have earned the final vote confirming their @CITES Appendix II listing at #CoP18. It was with your passion and support that we were able to shine a spotlight on the endangered mako shark and help them earn protections critical to this species' survival. We applaud Canadian Ministers @jonathanwnv and @cathmckennaottcen who, with the encouragement of @RichardBranson and @ShawnHeinrichs, changed their votes from "NO" to "YES" in support of this listing. This is the power of a movement for a healthy and abundant ocean. Image by @shawnheinrichs // MISCONCEPTION- On first glance, the mako shark looks like a terrifying creature. Razor sharp teeth that protrude from it's powerful jaws, stealth torpedo form built for speed, and large, dark eyes for tracking down and intercepting prey. And these native characteristics feed into our irrational fears that are fueled by media that has portrayed these animals as terrifying monsters and mindless man-eaters. Beliefs drive our actions, and in the case of sharks, have enabled us to allow the slaughter of over 100 MILLION SHARKS per year, driving many large shark populations to the brink of extinction in just a few decades. TRUTH - The teeth of the Mako Shark are designed specifically for feeding on tuna, marlin and other large plastic fish, it's torpedo-like shape is built for rapid acceleration to close in quickly on fast-swimming pelagic fish, and its large eyes draw in the light needed to hunt its prey in the depths of the oceans. This is a magnificent being that lives in the high seas, rarely crosses paths with humans, and if it does, tends to avoid them. And given the precipitous declines in their populations over the past few decades, they have far more to fear from us, than us from them. It's time we take a hard look at our beliefs, seek out the truth to reshape our beliefs, and take action to support the conservation of these magnificent creatures, and all the other species that are racing towards extinction by our very hands. CALL TO ACTION! Right now, we have an unprecedented opportunity to help achieve critically-needed protection for 18 shark and ray species, including the endangered mako shark, under a proposed @CITES Appendix II listing. But we need two-thirds of the world’s countries to vote ‘YES’ at this month's #CoP18 conference. That is why a collective of voices are asking Canadian Ministers @jonathanwnv and @cathmckennaottcen to switch their vote from "NO" to "YES," expanding their global position as leaders in ocean conservation and standing up for the protection of these magnificent apex predators. #CITES4Sharks From @sealegacy petition : "CITES is a United Nations body of some 183 members nations, whose mission it is to offer threatened species the protection they need to recover. Those members are voting on whether or not 18 shark and ray species deserve to be added to the list, for the mako shark, it could mean the difference between survival and extinction." #shark #ray #makoshark #requin #requinmako #marineconservation #endangeredspecies #cop18 https://www.instagram.com/p/B1TqOQtH4VV/?igshid=125woq7a7jn2y
