Around every April in the mountains of Citico Creek Wilderness, the area creeks and streams come to life as thousands of female smallmouth buffalo fish make their pilgrimage to Citico Creek to lay their eggs. Unlike salmon, who travel far distances to deposit their eggs, buffalo fish are apt to do so in a hurry, often staying out for 3 to 4 days. This fascinating spectacle of nature typically lasts through the first week of April if the conditions are favorable.
