Finally racked the Tropical Pale Ale brewed with citra hops. Inspired by a version made by Modern Times, a great local brewery, last week, hiked part way up Pinnicle Peak and savoured my favorite New Mexican style green Chile stew at Los Dos Molinos in Mesa. Yum.

Next, dry hop and carbonate to perfection in the new Torpedo keg.

Citra Sisyphus 

I’ve never been a huge fan of Citra hops. In a blend I’d never pick them out, and on their own, they never quite live up to the name. 

Case in point: Double Mountain’s latest single hop IPA. I get some lemony flavor. Some citrus zest on the nose. But mostly it’s an herb game, thyme? A squeeze of lemon, a hint of pepper, lots of herbs – it sounds more like a vinaigrette recipe than a fruity beer description. I like it all the same.

It could just be my tongue. Maybe I just can’t taste the way other people can. It sounds like subject of discussion among college freshmen, but it’s true that one person just can’t taste the same as another. I may be doomed to forever shrug my shoulders as others fawn over the latest greatest hops.

Your Weekly Curmudgeon

You can’t release an IPA these days without dropping a few “juicys” in the press release. Take the new Lush IPA from Fremont Brewing. It’s both juicy and tropical according to the press release, and “tastes like spring feels.” Sure. It tastes like melons and blood orange, both good flavors, but I feel like I’ve had this beer already, many times. 

But that’s where we are. The market demands juice, and the brewers will give it to them. Every new beer is made with Citra and Mosaic hops. Every beer will be an IPA. And everything will start to taste the same again.

I’m not saying IPA is the new light lager, but it seriously looks like in the near future, the only beer drinkers who are going to be satisfied are those who like IPA, specifically juicy IPA. You can now go online and argue about which beer is the best simulacrum of a papaya.

I just thought the point of “the Craft Beer Revolution” is that we’d have lots of different beers to drink. Not be pummeled with the same three hops in every other bottle.

More Citra Than All Citra... This motherf#cker is both a love letter and a mic drop in the world of citra hop beers.  Dry hopped for suuuper softness ...this is damn elegant Imperial IPA, smooth, a little sweet, nice hops.  I could have this every day...

Chirps Up!  King Canary’s cashmere and citra hop IPA conditioned on coconut.  The cashmere hop + coconut combo is phenomenal! !!!
