Bound: Zacharias Smith Must Die by @citrusses

This was a fun little bind I made for citrusses to go along with the podfic I made in collaboration with @amandabynds (she did the art, I did the podfic.)

I had made myself a little single section pamphlet bind of it, but I was underwhelmed by the design, and I wanted to make something better for the author. With the help of @plor-bindery and @maleekamolscreates I came up with this Vertigo-inspired design. It's fun!

The Isle of Ogygia by citrusses on AO3

There is an island, far out in the sea.

It’s useless to fight Potter. Isn’t that the lesson he’s refused to learn his entire life? // “Harry,” he says, as instructed, the word another link in the chain he’s binding himself with. // Potter comes back the next month, as reliable as the tides. Draco starves for him when he’s not there. // But Harry is also clearly a walking disaster and would apparently rather be kidnapped than face the mess he’s made of his life, so if Draco wants to spend the next four years eating Harry’s pancakes and fucking Harry until he can’t walk, he needs Harry to get his head right. // “There’s still a chance we could starve to death,” says Draco. “A bad enough storm could come in and–” “Then we’ll starve,” Harry says, smiling at him, and Draco gives up, because he’s finally learned his lesson about fighting Harry Potter.

A perfect little miracle of a story, almost fairytale-like in its rhythms, setting, and concision — though I don't know any fairytales featuring a protagonist quite as petulant, arseholey, or delightfully unfiltered (in the narration) as this Draco. Its real triumph might be the world-building, though, which is accomplished swiftly, elegantly, and uniquely — creating an expansion to the magic of the HP universe and portkeys that I will be thinking about for a long while. The dynamic is lovely as well: an easy relationship, that still honors the fact that these are two broken boys in need of saving. The smut is very good, too, as is the ust.

Secrets involving Harry are, in his experience, painful, poisonous things. For example: your parents were wizards, and we totally knew, we’ve just been gaslighting a small child about it for the past decade. Also, there’s an entire world full of people who are just as freaky as you are, but we kept that one from you too, just for shits and giggles! Oh, and there’s a madman out there who will stop at nothing to destroy you. P.S., not done yet, there’s still a piece of his soul inside you. You’re gonna have to die to get that one sorted. Yeah. Harry kind of fucking hates secrets.

This is a short and sweet delight. I think I love Harry most when he's oblivious, and boy is he oblivious here.

Happy Friday to all, but especially my fellow Tortured Poets!

Don't you love when the stars align to make something beautiful for you? That's what happened with my Happy Hour rec for this week.

Our Objective Remains Unchanged by @citrusses (46,147 words, rated E)

Harry Potter, returning member of the Oxford University Boat Club, has two goals for the spring of 2005: beat Cambridge, and beat Draco Malfoy. Perhaps not in that order.

I've been in a bit of a fic rut - and definitely not because of a lack of great fic options - but nothing was hitting right for me at this moment in time. Finally, in my marked for later list, I came back across Citrusses' fic, and was thrilled to finally read it. I'd been looking forward to it for a long time because I love Citrusses as a writer. It just so happened to be a perfect pick for the album drop I've been looking forward to as well with it's academic setting and Tortured Poet Draco.

For someone who doesn't enjoy any sports whatsoever, I've recently found that I adore sports fics. The competition and camaraderie provide a setting and tension that I really enjoy and this holds true with rowing as well. Citrusses' dialogue made me laugh out loud several times while reading and the building tension of Harry and Draco's relationship (for good and bad) kept me absorbed in this fic.

Most of all, I loved how Citrusses wrote college students. I so clearly remember being 19-22 and the uncertainty and anxiety that I constantly felt. It's hard to suddenly be expected to be an adult, but have so little experience at it. Citrusses wrote that feeling in a way that was realistic, but gave her characters grace when they made their mistakes.

Even if you are not a Tortured Poet, I think it'd be impossible not to enjoy Citrusses' fic. And if you are a Tortured Poet, once you've finally finished analyzing all the lyrics you should definitely come give this a read to keep those vibes going!
